Description Because the teacher said we needed markers for my Commercial Art class, and that she suggested Prismacolors, I got to go buy a really nice set
I bought a primary pack of Prismas in the past, but it's really not very good because you really do need more than one shade of each color to shade decently D: Or at least a grey or some "transition" color.
So I was expecting to buy a pack of 24, as that seemed to be a pretty decent amount of colors and it wasn't too expensive, and my mom was okay with it-- I'd need 'em eventually, plus she knew they'd get used.
HOWEVER. We went into OfficeDepot first (it's right next to Michael's) for school supplies, and I found a small selection of good art supplies tucked in a corner xD. I checked the prices for comparison with Michael's (24 set: ~$60 48 set: $109). So we went into Michael's and I was expecting prices to be pretty much the same. Lo and behold, they were selling 24 sets for $89 and 48 sets for $189 o___O. The only difference I could decipher is the Michael's sets came with cases, but that doesn't warrant an extra $80 o__<. So my mom decided to let me get the 48 set at OfficeDepot, 'cause even she could tell that was steal xDD (OfficeDepot wasn't even having a sale on Prismas o__O). I got the last pack .
But now I wonder what else Michael's has jacked up the price of...

Anyways, this was just a doodle done late at night so I could test my lovely new Prisma set
I decided to draw Nero because he has both skin and fur (I wanted to try drawing both). So I did a pencil sketch, colored, then added the black lineart. It's littered with problems, but overall I think it turned out half-decent C: Especially since its my first full-color marker work (I've done doodles where I colored the skin tone in marker), and I'm not yet familiar with the colors. Markers seem to work best if you apply color in fast succession, so it helps to know beforehand what colors you have xD
I need to practice with them more

Great concept idea, maybe you'd take some interest into the Antaros Project. Hmm...take a look on our journal to get a rough outline.

See, I wait for the 40% coupons that Michaels puts out and *then* I go and get the crazy expensive stuff. Depends on what it is, really. There's also places like dickblick.com too.

I don't think I had a 40% coupon.
And at the time, the markers were like 25% off or something, so the coupon wouldn't have worked :C (it's only good for regularly-priced items)

Sad, sad. They typically show up in the mail or the Sunday papers where I am.
Well, there's that, I suppose. Sometimes I wish that Michaels would do what some other stores do which is allow the coupons to over ride the advertised sale price so you can get the 40 instead of 25%. Saves me the wait. Though for things that they consistently do that to, such as most large sketch pads, I go to smaller art stores and support them instead.

They're typically here too, I just forgot to clip it out 8D;;

Sadly, there are no smaller art stores anywhere around here. The closest is like 45 minutes away.

Pleh. That is sad indeed! Well, I guess for me, I still have a 20-30 minute drive at best to the first closest one. I just tend to be in that area on a regular enough basis that the drive no longer bothers me.

I don't really mind long drives, but I just never go anywhere near the city (which is where the art stores are)

OOO: You know how much I love Nero.

The paws, facial expression, tail, the fact that you used multiple colours to shade everything, gaaaah, this is such a pretty picture. xD; I really like taking fairly 'unimportant' sketches and sprucing them up though. Makes me want to buy a set of prismas now myself, though 180 some bucks US is probably closer to $250 over here. >.o; I think I'll have to wait to get a job for that.

akireru In reply to Kijarat [2007-08-31 19:12:56 +0000 UTC]

Well, make sure you check the local office supply store before you buy them from an art store D8

Honestly, I'm not sure I would fork over that much of my own money for markers anyways :/. Especially since I currently have $25 xD (even if I had enough to cover the price, , I'm not sure I would buy it simply because there are other things that I'd want more 8C ) Luckily my mom was willing to pay : D
See if your art department has any first

Wow, this drawing came out pretty good! I can't color with ANY kind of markers. I always kill my art...

akireru In reply to Razorscab [2007-08-30 21:15:53 +0000 UTC]

That's why I didn't work too hard on the sketch 8D;; Didn't want to mess up anything I was pleased with xD

Have you tried Prismacolors or Copics? They're really quite different from say, Crayolas.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Razorscab In reply to akireru [2007-08-31 01:51:19 +0000 UTC]

Never tried them... mostly because I don't have mutch money. I'm painting watercolors with a paint set you would give a 5 year old!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

akireru In reply to Razorscab [2007-08-31 19:06:39 +0000 UTC]

Haha, it's best to use someone else's set first 8D

But why I say so is art markers (like Prismas or Copics) let you layer on color, so you can technically shade something just like with watercolor-- by adding more ink. Unlike Crayolas or whatever, which don't get any darker if you keep coloring.

Hey, I'm not against using little-kiddy art supplies xD Especially when they're only a fraction of the price of the good stuff.

TCStarwind [2007-08-30 02:26:07 +0000 UTC]

I have the 24 set, but that's not a big problem since I usually use colored pencils to do shading. XD I'd love to get a bigger set (because one purple seriously isn't enough, yet I have like... 4 blues?) I don't ever use them anymore, though, so buying them would be a waste.

But your shading looks great. I don't think I'd ever be able to do that with markers. Interesting design, too. He got no ears. D: XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

akireru In reply to TCStarwind [2007-08-30 21:11:12 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, the 48 set has like.. 6 blues and I don't know how many oranges/yellows. And suprisingly few browns (Like, 3? Come on, now).
And I'll probably need to buy a couple shades of grey, because you can't really shade with a black D:

You could use a light blue, then layer on purple and perhaps then a darker blue? It must be hard to get an exact color shade with markers xDD

I'm sure you could shade just as well xD; It's not hard, you just keep layering on color.
And thank you C:

This turned out really awesome~ @3@

Dude, that is CRAZY cheap for prisma markers.... o:

I have a few myself, but I made the mistake of getting the rainbow 6-pack, so I can't really do much with them. >>;;

...... I wanna play with yours. D:

akireru In reply to dracowolf [2007-08-30 01:58:22 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I got that pack too (was it 5 or 6 markers?). It's no good u__u
However, I'm going to take the 5 pack to school : D I was actually thinking how much of a pain it'd be to carry around 48 prismas all day (plus I set them all up by color in this cool stand they came with). So then I realized the rainbow pack would work fine : D. I doubt we're gonna need markers on a daily basis.

lol, yea.... That'd be a pain. xD;

Although, you should totally bring them in sometime for drawing and painting.
