Description wanted to do a more realistic digital piece, mostly for portfolio reasons (I'd rather not submit anime-styled work for fear they'll think that's all I can do).

I didn't think too hard about the concept, I just wanted to draw a girl and wolves (and skulls are always a plus). It reminds a lot of people of Princess Mononoke--can't say I blame them, but I wasn't inspired by anything in particular. I's just a straightforward combination of motifs I like

Still trying to work on interesting color combos. I can't decide if I'm satisfied with these colors or not, but I'm done with it for now! xD

Nice styling and like how the upper skull piece draws the eyes to it, before you focus on the wolves eyes, thanks for posting, great drawing

I love not only the way this picture looks, but the way it feels. The subtle colours and warm shading make it feel hauntingly soft and inviting. Beautiful job!

Ooooh I really like the watercolor/painterly feel if this! 8) I admit I thought of Mononoke right away due to the white wolves; I think if they were brown, black or dark gray, I don't think so many folks would think of that right off the bat. :U

Awesome skuuuuullllll.

I absolutely love the softness and the shading effects you've gotten here. I think if the wolves hadn't been white, no one would've thought of Princess Mononoke, though.

akireru In reply to NezuKunoichi [2011-04-06 23:16:28 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!

Actually, I uploaded the black and white WIP to facebook and someone asked if it was Princess Mononoke inspired But coloring them white definitely strengthened the connection, haha!
On the other hand, I think they look better white than they would any other color (well, technically they're a pale cyan but it looks white!), so I wasn't going to avoid a strong composition just 'cause it looks a bit similar to something else

Really cool!
And I'm not gonna lie, Princess Mononoke was the first thing I thought of when I saw it

At first glance, it looks like it was done traditionally with pencils or pastels or something
The colours seem fine to me, very natural

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

akireru In reply to AKG32 [2011-04-06 18:45:37 +0000 UTC]

yeah, it is pretty similar, especially once I colored the wolves white! But there are certainly worse things it could be compared to, so I'm not getting too hung up on it!

I downloaded this really fun brush that gives that effect I don't mess with weird brushes often, but I really like the results so maybe I should! xD

AKG32 In reply to akireru [2011-04-06 22:23:05 +0000 UTC]

It should be taken as a compliment, if anything

Cool! You definately should
I still don't understand how people can draw digitally, it just doesn't work for me

akireru In reply to AKG32 [2011-04-06 23:13:17 +0000 UTC]

It does take some getting used to! But to be honest, once you familiarize yourself with the program, it's pretty similar to traditional art! (especially when you have a tablet)
Like my process for this was just like how I'd paint something--big, broad strokes to get the basic shapes then gradually refining for texture and detail.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

AKG32 In reply to akireru [2011-04-06 23:29:44 +0000 UTC]

That it does
I wanted to get a tablet, but after seeing the Cintiq, I just can't bring myself to get anything else. I'll have to go without food for a long time if I wanted to save up enough to get one though...
I guess it doesn't throw you off, having to watch the screen while drawing on a tablet?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

akireru In reply to AKG32 [2011-04-06 23:39:18 +0000 UTC]

At first it definitely does! It took me about a year to fully adjust to mine (but I didn't use it very often, so I'm sure you can adjust faster if you practice with it more than I did).
But now I'm just as fast on the computer as I am by hand.

AKG32 In reply to akireru [2011-04-06 23:40:46 +0000 UTC]

I guess I'll have to give it another try!
Right now I'm about as skilled with a mouse as a moderately talented 8 year old

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

akireru In reply to AKG32 [2011-04-06 23:46:10 +0000 UTC]

Haha yeah mouses are tough! You CAN do good art with them, but it is very tedious and time consuming.

Actually the reason it took me so long to adjust to my tablet is I was so used to the mouse! The tablet was good for sketching and texture/repetitive strokes, but for fine detail I'd use the mouse since I had better control.
Now I use my tablet exclusively though

AKG32 In reply to akireru [2011-04-06 23:52:04 +0000 UTC]

Sounds good, I'm still gonna wait till I can afford the Cintiq to get into digital art. Maybe if I could get family to pitch in as a kind of birthday present at some point...

AKG32 In reply to akireru [2011-04-06 23:55:52 +0000 UTC]

lol yeah, but I intend to get one eventually, so I don't want to buy a different tablet before I end up getting one

but yeah, $2000 is a lot of money, especially for a university student. But I will have one! ...one day
