There are different levels of 'dead' apparently...Amalfi is skeptical as usual. Marthe is disappointed. She ran all that way for nothing? Could have just gone after the hare...

Just how dead is dead?

Well the question seems to be whether or not he is dead enough!

Also nice rein catch there.

In this comic, there are degrees of deadness before 'fully dead'Β Β

Also, does he just call his horse "Horse" or was that supposed to be "my horse"?

Haha, yeah! His horse's name is 'Horse'. Sebastian's naming skills are great! Β

That's worse than my Yokov, at least he names his horses after attributes they have (current horse "Grey", former horse "Snorer").

akitku In reply to dragondoodle [2019-07-28 04:30:22 +0000 UTC]

Aww haha, β€˜Snorer’ is just adorable!!! Clearly Yokov and Seb have very similar naming styles.

To be fair, the horse (and man eventually, long story) lived up to that name His snoring could clear the forest, it was so loud

*Dionora appears mysteriously from the shrubbery, startling everyone*
On a more serious note, I love the eye glow to indicate magical scrutiny, I wonder what Seb is trained to look for in another semidead supernatural.
I also love your trees! So spindly and twisted!

Such are her ways! As someone on Tapas said, she has 'nunnergy'. Β

I'm really having trouble with coming up how to illustrate their various powers in comic form. Yellow eye-glow is 'second sight' that is an ability to see through magic, to see auras and stuff like that....but how does it look to the person who is actually using it??? And how will I indicate other powers? Change colors? Like, sickly green glow is necromancy? That's just going to get confusing and boring really quickly....

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Sleyf In reply to akitku [2019-07-24 09:02:03 +0000 UTC]

Oh my gosh! Nunnergy!

oh oh, with the second sight, what if you revealed the aura as though we're looking through Seb's eyes, so we can see what he's seeing and realise what it is?

Change your colour set, or style.Β  You know how in some games you are given various 'sights' - for example, Dead Eye in Red Dead Redemption casts everything in a yellow haze - Witcher Sense in the Witcher makes everything dark and desaturated, while important things show up vibrant red or yellow - take a leaf out of those examples (i'll be doing something similar for the box maker, so it's trial and error!)

I don't think it could get boring! It's powers!

He's not sure himself actually. Dionora's teaching methods consist in: 'give them a hint, then let them figure it out by themselves'

Azul-din [2019-07-23 17:28:01 +0000 UTC]

I'm wondering here- there was a suggestion in some of the early vampire movies ( suggested also obliquely in the original legends of the Undead) that the stake (or sword?) through the heart is merely a way of fixing the Vampire into his body and by extension into a specific place; Unless the head is removed, removal of said stake (or sword) should result in the Vampire coming back to...uh...life...so to speak...Again, the nature of the wounds suggest more an attempt to punish or to inflict suffering than a straightforward kill. Being immortal is a mixed blessing if someoneΒ  really doesn't like you!

akitku In reply to Azul-din [2019-07-23 20:31:47 +0000 UTC]

Ah, indeed! You saw through it! The sword pins him to the spot and as long as it's lodged in his heart he can't start healing. If he were lessΒ  wounded he could try to pull it out himself. But he's to weak to do it now.Β

Thank you! You are right of course, Dionora is avoiding saying certain things on purpose, hoping that Sebastian will pick up on it himself. We shall see if he will.Β

Well Dionora is checking how well he grasped her lessons. As for Seb, well that will be clear in the next page.Β
Actually, I'm wondering if I should do an extra page explaining the powers and how they work in this universe....What do you think?Β

JezMiller In reply to akitku [2019-07-23 16:24:36 +0000 UTC]

You have already. I have it copied to a separate document for my reference It's here:-

"And they can tell how much 'deathly' energy is in a body, which means they can tell (approximately) how long the body has been dead, or, for the really talented ones, how long the living thing has to live" - I'm guessing that's what's going on here?

That final panel is quite striking, with the symbolism of the ravens being driven away from the body. I love the mist-shrouded visuals here

akitku In reply to JezMiller [2019-07-23 16:33:00 +0000 UTC]

Oh wow, I completely forgot I wrote that! Thank you for reminding me!!! Actually while Sebastian does have potential for the 'mors' powers (because of his sire) he hasn't began developing them much yet. For now, Dionora wants him to use the second sight ability to check what this guy actually is, and in this way to check if the kid has learned anything yet. Actually, I assumed that it was the meeting with Matt and Ranulf that spurred Humphrey into organizing a teacher for Seb and Amalfi.Β

I often refer to it. The Jackdaw's remark about astral projection being "bloody dangerous" came from it, for instance.

That should add an interesting element to their reunion! I am really looking forward to the collaboration, when it eventually comes - I know it won't be for a while yet, but Unholy Writ will be a direct prequel to it, so I need to finish that, too

Ah, I wondered about that line actually! So that's why.
Yeah, it will be a while, but I think it can be pretty awesome!Β

jonwassing In reply to akitku [2019-07-23 14:40:39 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I’d say do that in a break between chapters kinda thing.

Let us guess at the powers while they use them, then reveal it and we can see if we were right. I love it when comics do that.
