Description I'm not very happy with the picture unfortunately, but I'm pleased that I managed to draw something at all as I haven't had much time to draw recently. Title comes from a song by Fleet Foxes:

He's a peasant boy from Sebastian's village. They were friends before Sebastian got sent away to the order. He was known for his wits and cleverness - hence the fox as a symbol.

Thank you so much! The black background was an experiment and I really panicked half way through...but it worked out ok. Yeah, the fox is supposed to be his "spirit" animal or something along those lines so they kind of resemble eachother.Β

This is really stunning! I love the contrast of the woods and the way that your juxtaposition of the cold, dark blue-blacks and the light, warm colours make the whole picture feeel like autumn, like an ending, and give a sense of foreboding...awesome and apt title, by the way! Really complements the image.

can't think how I missed this one, except that I've been pretty busy myself lately. A nicely illustrative piece, and should be judged on that level , I think. You have a unique ability to suggest a story behind your pictures - I wonder what this one is.

akitku In reply to Azul-din [2013-12-16 15:55:10 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! I was less satisfied with the picture, so I'm glad you think it works. I guess part of the reason why my pictures might involve a sense of stories is because they are pictures of very specific characters and scenes from my stories. No matter how insignificant they are they have their backgrounds, their character traits, I know what will happen to them in the future and so on. This character is very insignificant. Even calling him a background character would be much I think - but I like drawing such characters as well. He was a servant at the home of the father of SebastianΒ akitku.deviantart.com/art/Tims… . He is sent out to search for the older son (Sebastian's brother) who has disappeared and is murdered right before managing to contact him. He was supposed to be an unusually bright boy - hence the fox familiar - who bit off more than he could chew.Β Sebastian later retraces his steps while searching for his brother.Β

Am I to understand you carry all these narratives in your head? It is rather like walking along a path through the wood, at every step invisible creatures scurry off in all directions ...fox familiar? But no, I asked and you have answered.Β  Thank you- I did follow the link, and then to the 'Timshel' song contained therein. You do have an interesting taste in music, as well.

akitku In reply to Azul-din [2013-12-16 20:56:05 +0000 UTC]

Ok, this will sound a bit silly but here is the truth of it: have you heard of role-playing games (RPG)?Β  The way this works is that one person acts as a narrator, they create the backbone of the story and embellish it with plot twists, characters and so on while the other player(s) invent a single character - this will be the main character(s) of the story. Then, together, they tell the story. The narrator describes the world and what's happening and the player(s) respond with what their characters do. So the stories that I illustrate so obsessively, are stories that my friend and I role-play out. We have six such stories in total and their working titles are: the Estonia tale, the Byzantium and Persia tale, the Cordoba tale, the Romania tale, the Acre tale, and finally the tales of Severin the Monk. We also make up shorter stories about the numerous side characters that appear in the narratives. I have many times wished I could write out these stories but it is a daunting task that I am afraid to face.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Azul-din In reply to akitku [2013-12-16 21:54:38 +0000 UTC]

Of course, I know the theory,- RPG games properly belong to my generation and predate computers. So the play is oral in nature- and do you take turns being narrator or is there a third individual? I have to say that the idea appeals to me mainly on aesthetic grounds- there was privacy and a certain exclusiveness inherent in the nature of the RP games, not this mass-produced cinema manque you get in Playstation et al. I think it is great that you and your friend have come up with this all on your own, your own private space to expand into. I have to keep reminding myself that the generation coming is neither bounded nor defined byΒ  western pop culture.

As for writing them out- well, it seems you have enough to face in that sphere at the moment, but there is a great deal of life still before you...who knows? But what I wouldn't give to be a fly on the wall during such a story session!

I really like the way you coloured the grass in the foreground - it seems to be swaying gently in the wind. I guess the freckles on the boy's face must have been difficult to do, since it's the sort of tiny detail that can make a picture truly great or ruin it irreversibly.Β

The sharp contrast between the dark forest and the softy lit foreground is very interesting too - but i have a feeling this effect would be more natural if the big tree and the fox cast long cold shadows. The way you did it, the fox appears to be a spirit-creature of some sort, weightless and ethereal. Which is also a cool effect

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

akitku In reply to joolita [2013-12-05 11:24:30 +0000 UTC]

The grass was such a disappointment to me actually! I'm very glad you say it looks ok because it was really such a source of frustration for me. The contrast between the black background and the yellow foreground was supposed to give this ethereal feeling. I wanted the whole scene to look a bit unreal. But you are right about the fox - I should have added shading. I often forget to do that and my characters (and animals) kind of float on the surface of things...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

joolita In reply to akitku [2013-12-08 18:45:04 +0000 UTC]

The grass is really a Β strong point here! I suspect you can't look at it because it gave you a hard time. It's always difficult to look at a finished piece objectively after one has spend hours cursing at the sheet of paper (or at least this is what my experience tells me )

Shades are indeed easy to forget. And they can ruin the drawing in no time, at least with markers or inking. I bet watercolour is equally unforgiving...
