at last! it's finished! WHOO-HOO!!!!!!!!!!this is that mermaid picture i've been talking about in journals for the last two weeks (if not more or less
)it's exciting to have this finished, i think this took about 3-4 hours, somewhere in there. i know it took 90 min. just to ink over the pencil lines!!!!!!
the black squiggles are "poison bubbles", which came in the middle of inking when i accidentally touched wet ink. so that's what i have to disguise it XD
i need to write a story behind this
for now you guys can make up your own.enjoy!

The only thing I suggest, is try to get a bit more definition, all those lines get a little bit mushed together, it takes a while to see whats happening. But I really like it

so when you say definition, make everything more spaced, or emphasize different details, or something...? i get what you mean but what did you have in mind, since i don't quite know what definiton is specifically...XD

the best way to create definition is through contrast. you can achieve that through texture (say dots against stripes), shading (light parts against dark), shape (squares against circles), lines (thin lines against thick), colour ect. there are more but I can't think of any at the moment ^^'

see in this example the wings are the same colour, but through texture and lighting, you know what is being represented. on the head lighter colours are used on top of dark, and on the bottom of the head and neck, opposing colours on the colour wheel are used for contrast, yellows against blues.

this one is similar to yours, just ink on paper, and full of detail, but you can still see what it is through the use of different shapes, textures and tone

yeah, i've pretty much experimented with everything you've said, but now that you're bringing this up these are things i need to keep practicing. my only thing is that i don't really know how to shade with ink pens. i am working a little on texture and lines, perhaps shape wouldn't apply to this picture. do you have any knowledge on how to do shading with inks.

yes, bu it's hard to explain, I'll give it a go.
there are several ways, comic book style, where you have big black areas, you could use water and a brush and do something similar to water colours (if your pen isnt waterproof) and crosshatching. if I want to shade in ink pen, I use it similar to a pencil. i use light short strokes, repetedly, building up a gradient (similar to crosshatching)

this was done in ball point pen, you can see where he used cross hatching (on the rocks mostly) building up tone by applying more black pen to some areas, and leaving some areas blank. you can also see where he went free style with his pen (on the fox). these different techniques create different textures wich help define the picture. to create shading with a pen is very similar to creating shading with any other material, just have some parts darker than others. the darkest parts being the furtherest away from the light source.
just research up on pictures like you want to do, and use them as reference/ispiration. and then just practice. thats all there is to art, practice, practice, practice ^^

yeah, that's true, i like teaching others new techniques based on my style from things i have learned in the past. art schools and classes really help with improvement though, that's probably the best way to do it. thanks again!

oh, well, for me what i learned is that one way to clean ink pens after using them is scrubing the tips with a toothbrush, just using regular water. the tips can come off, FYI
