Description “You look like a city girl,” he said when I returned to the airport in my hometown.
To this day I don’t know if I was faking.

“Get out of this town or get pregnant,” she said,
and I fled like a bird in the sightline of the first snow,
but it’s 10 AM on a Tuesday when I get the paper pharmacy packet,
and it’s 10 PM on a Sunday when I realize how empty the bottom of the world is.

He wants to live by the ocean. I already live between continents,
draping foam-capped waves around my shoulders,
scraping the sea bed for transpacific cables and reading
sonar vibrations against my skin like a heartbeat.

Walking the breakwater, a stone crescent moon holding back the tide,
talking to a young man with a fishing rod and a muted sigh
because neither of us found what we’re looking for
amid squawking gulls and the snap of rigging in the marina.

My father tells us how to find the space station as if we could search together,
but he asks if I can see the southern lights while the sun rises in the north.
The photo shows four people on the edge of the Grand Canyon. I am not one.
I stand at the edge of the Mariana Trench while the abyss gazes into me.

A compass is useless. Down here, everything is north,
and this time he won’t be in the airport to welcome me home.

Okay, truly magnificent. Gripped me, made me see myself through those eyes, broke my heart just a little when it ended. I wanted more. From a POEM, for heaven's sake. Wonderful. I will reread this often.

I enjoyed this very much! Guess it resonated so much, since it brought back memories of my Navy days floating far from shore. Abandoning roots & loved ones in pursuit of dreams. While finding adventure, I also found loneliness & regretful longing. For me, it was an experience I'd never give up, but I did also lose connections & unredeemable time with people I held dear. Worth it, heck yah. But it also hurt. Still hurts. Somethings just aren't there when you return. Sometimes you just aren't the same when you come home.

Sorry, but got no critique. Ace work! Some favs... missing at the Canyon & keeping company with the abyss. Useless compass (I Hate being lost). 10AM/PM. 2 people: no fish. Heck, I pretty much liked it all. Hope you don't mind if I +fav.

I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it. Thanks for reading and faving. I can only imagine how lonely it is out on a ship. I have the advantage that I came here with a loved one... but there's no going home anytime soon. I can't leave the country until my permanent residency is approved. Been here a year and a half already, and still the only stranger I can strike up conversation with is a fisherman.
