Great shot. The sepia tone, and the fact that it's surrounded by long grass makes the mailbox look lonely and abandoned.
Yes, I give feelings to inanimate objects...

most of that was just framing so have fun getting away with it! This is an amazing photo! Nice choice of shot... really has feeling to "a mail box"?! (can't believe it but its has feeling!)

Yeah, it's an iconic mailbox. Especially in England, because we don't use this type of mail box, the posti always drops mail through the door. Here in England, it always seems synonmous with quiet, peacefull rural farming towns, especially with a warm sunset or golden glow (which also fits your image as well). As an icon, I think it started in the 1970's with the original Superman the movie, staring Christopher Reeves.

Truly gorgeous mood ! I love the post-process manipulations. It gives some kind of melancholic old-fashioned eerie to this well composed shot.
Very nice job !

yea everyone seems to have their own preference. its amazing how a photo taken at the same time can have such a different mood just based on some postwork.

i guess i figure if photoshop is there to help why not use it? but i know what you mean. you're better off doing stuff right the first time. photoshop can make photographers very very lazy. however, i would have to say the best way to convert to black and white (or sepia) is via photoshop or something similar.

True. I'm not really the post work guru. I prefer to take the pictures just as I invision them, but sometimes a little this and that will help.

those are techniques that could have been achieved in a wet darkroom! i wouldnt worry about if others think its a manip or photography. the bottom line is that you shot with a camera!

if you like the black edges it's a somewhat simple trick. just use the rectangular marquee tool with feather set to a big number depending on the size of your image, and select the whole picture...then right click and hit select inverse...then hit the delete key on the keyboard...and it starts to erase the border. hit it again and more erases.
