Description I'd put this under photo manipulation, but I've seen people get away with way worse and call it photography on here so what the hell may as well join them.

[notes: cuves, gradient to darken sky, vignetting, convert to sepia, border, brushes to create scratches, and I think that may be it]

It's really nice perspective, although you may of changed the shot to sepia and added a few scratches and things, it's still a really nice shot. Great work

Great shot. The sepia tone, and the fact that it's surrounded by long grass makes the mailbox look lonely and abandoned.

Yes, I give feelings to inanimate objects...

GMCPhotographics In reply to akuba [2006-06-30 08:36:13 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it's an iconic mailbox. Especially in England, because we don't use this type of mail box, the posti always drops mail through the door. Here in England, it always seems synonmous with quiet, peacefull rural farming towns, especially with a warm sunset or golden glow (which also fits your image as well). As an icon, I think it started in the 1970's with the original Superman the movie, staring Christopher Reeves.

yea? what was your writing about?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Rilld In reply to akuba [2006-07-01 11:26:16 +0000 UTC]

Tis about a group of friends cycling out of town on midsdummer's eve, finding an old field with really long grass, and spending the night there drinking and listening to music. It's in a series of writing i'm doing called Icy Blue, about these kids who a whole load of shit happens to, and how they find happiness in really simple things. This part in the field is one of those rare perfect moments where everything is just right, and nothing can touch it.
This image captured that perfectly for me: the sepia tones are warm and hazy, and the mail box seems to be a reminder of the domestic life they're trying to escape.
Anyways, i just love the photo :]

Sorry i'm rambling.

Thanks for asking

Truly gorgeous mood ! I love the post-process manipulations. It gives some kind of melancholic old-fashioned eerie to this well composed shot.

Very nice job !

yea everyone seems to have their own preference. its amazing how a photo taken at the same time can have such a different mood just based on some postwork.

i guess i figure if photoshop is there to help why not use it? but i know what you mean. you're better off doing stuff right the first time. photoshop can make photographers very very lazy. however, i would have to say the best way to convert to black and white (or sepia) is via photoshop or something similar.

Esteficita In reply to akuba [2006-06-28 17:48:12 +0000 UTC]

True. I'm not really the post work guru. I prefer to take the pictures just as I invision them, but sometimes a little this and that will help.

Iamwiley [2006-06-21 14:31:33 +0000 UTC]

those are techniques that could have been achieved in a wet darkroom! i wouldnt worry about if others think its a manip or photography. the bottom line is that you shot with a camera!

wow..just great and the black edges are magnificent, it really gives you the impression of an old work of art

can i ask you what photoshop you used

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

akuba In reply to MidoriAnca [2006-06-17 15:16:47 +0000 UTC]

if you like the black edges it's a somewhat simple trick. just use the rectangular marquee tool with feather set to a big number depending on the size of your image, and select the whole picture...then right click and hit select inverse...then hit the delete key on the keyboard...and it starts to erase the border. hit it again and more erases.
