At first glance the cowl looked like Death's hood, leaning in close and staring at him.
Which I think adds a neat little bit of (unintentional?) symbolism.

Interestingly, I thought Death was crowning Bruce instead of removing his cowl at first. I like the relation with Death because of the significance of Batman's one rule (and why he chooses to be an agent of justice and not a vigilante/executioner).
