Description
Rendered in DAZ Studio 4.6 Pro      Postwork in GIMP 2.8

Barriss Offee demonstrates her Force Healing abilities in front of Ahsoka Tano as their escort frigate is preparing to land.

This render has been sitting in the think tank for far too long and I am so glad to see it finished! I've actually made a few renders like this but none of them were good enough for me to feel satisfied. This render is inspired by the awesome works of Raikoh-illust . Most specifically, the digital painting below served as the bulk of my inspiration for this. I hope you like it this render! This is my first stab at misty, swirly light type of stuff.

This is interesting, I like the way you have posed the two characters out and also put their reflections in the window. The energy like thing in Barriss's hands was the first thing what drew my attention, I find it very pretty ^^ Also I love the background with with the window and buildings, it is very eye catching and a beautiful view.

I think Ahsokas expression should be a bit more 'Shocked' Like 'Wow' because I don't think Ahsoka has really has seen this before and I know I would be like 'Wow' if I saw it happen right in front of me.

Another thing I love is the room design, with the blind, bed and light. I just cant stop looking at it hehe.

Keep up the good work e.deviantart.net/emoticons/w/w… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="387" title=" (Wink)"/>

Thanks, Savvel! I seriously wasn't expecting this render to have such a wow factor! I was expecting it to get the mild positive feedback that most of my art gets. Well, I'm not complaining lol.

Interesting notes about Ahsoka's expression. I was going for more of a 'stunned in wonder' sort of look, but I never really thought about what it would be like to witness that. I guess I was assuming that all Jedi were familiar with healing, but it is rare. Thanks for you thoughts.

Humm stunned in wonder is also a good idea for her expression >:-D
Humm maybe but it is still a good look ^^
Welcomes! I am glad to share them!

Really awesome...I've always loved this about Barriss (I'm a dedicated fan of Jedi Healers) and think it fits her character VERY well, as revealed in books such as the "MedStar" series and other places. I love Ahsoka and Barriss' semi-relaxed posing in this piece as having a casual conversation to get to know one another better...Ahsoka looks as if she's asking a question, and Barriss (LOVE the face here, once again) looks as if she is listening intently while already knowing exactly what/how to answer.

The low lighting combined with the swirl of healing energy in Barriss' hands gives a mystical vibe to it all, and the pic (in my opinion) seems to have a touch of anxious desire/sexual tension(?) to it, as if they both want to be interesting and impress the other a bit. I admit that it almost feels like we're maybe seeing some of the "early days" of the Barrissoka relationship here, as the two friends/future sweethearts get to know one another better...making a bit of impressionable small talk amidst the occasional, intimately vague question stemming from their growing attraction and emotional curiosities... I am also a huge fan of healers. I desperately wished that they'd explore this side of Barriss in the clone wars show or even healers in general. Maybe they would've if Disney hadn't cancelled the show. At least we can explore it through art and literature.

You're not far off with the "wanting to impress each other" bit and the early days of their relationship. Rather spot-on actually. In my head-canon, it takes a long time through a series of rather innocent interactions like this for Barrissoka to get together. I don't know how familiar you are with my Barrissoka works, but this render is a sort of an epilogue image to my comic "Reverie."

skyguypat In reply to AlairaArt [2014-11-29 16:25:55 +0000 UTC]

Agreed...we'll always have the "MedStar" series (my favorite EU/Legends books) thankfully, but it indeed would have been nice to have seen this noble Jedi profession in the CW. Not only are there plenty of great stories that could have been told of Jedi Healers amidst the backdrop of a violent galactic war, but we'd have very likely seen that much more of Barriss as she displayed her beautiful gift/Force specialty for viewers around the world! In fact, it wouldn't have been difficult to work in at least SOME of the "MedStar" material, as none of it really contradicts anything that was specifically seen or said in the show (one reason I still basically consider it canon, for all relevant purposes). But yeah...I feel ya 100% on this one.

Awesome, I'm so glad that I was able to interpret the piece fairly correctly for the most part! At times I've wondered if it's merely my imagination running wild with the things I conclude (not that I think there's anything wrong with that when it comes to personal artistic interpretation), but I swear there are just certain elements and subtle implications that stand out to me...and I simply read accordingly. Oh, and I definitely agree that Barrissoka, like any relationship (especially a romantic one), took a deal of time to build and followed a progression of innocent interactions that became playfully cautious personal inquiries and physical gestures (brushing hair aside, laying a hand on one's leg while sharing a laugh, comforting back rubs, etc.), eventually evolving into the desired intimate union that both hoped for. That type of attention to detail (both visual and conceptual in a piece's story) along with its realism amidst what is basically fantastical myth makes for the very successful work that you produce, in my opinion...I am most definitely already very much a fan, even though my time here has been brief thus far. I am currently familiarizing myself with your Barrissoka works more after recently discovering/commenting on a couple of your wonderful productions (including this one) highlighting this subject...I will be sure to read your comic and comment on it! AlairaArt In reply to JoswanKodaigo [2014-05-04 19:02:52 +0000 UTC]

I made it on a transparent layer in GIMP 2.8. It is completely 2D and not present in the 3D scene. I put a light source where it should be and rendered the scene. Then, I added it in during post work and carefully moved, scaled and erased it to appear to be between Barriss' hands. I then did the same process again for the window reflection only while giving it more transparency to fit better with Barriss' reflection.

I sort of feel like doing that sort of thing in 2D during post is cheating considering the art medium, but I DID NOT want to try making the Force Heal swirlygig in 3D lol.

Oh, wow Crimson! This is extraordinary! You got the dim lighting down in this (at least it looks legit to my eye), and the reflections on the glass, awesome! Just plain awesome! And the background (supposing it's Coruscant has a very Mcquarrie-esk Matte painting look, with that classic Sci-fi outlandish spirit! One of your best of the two of them I'd say

Thank you so much! I really need to look back and study this render. I did it late at night when I couldn't sleep. I never in a million years would've dreamed that something done on a whim would rise to one of my best renders ever! I need to really analyze it and figure out what I did to make this great. I would love to say that this is a testament to how good of an artist I am, but I'm self-accountable enough to admit that this was a fluke.

thebingbang In reply to AlairaArt [2014-04-29 03:32:05 +0000 UTC]

Problem is, if you analyze it too much, you won't be able to repeat it or find out what made it so great, most likely! Seems to be one of those things that are best when you're NOT thinking about it. Some of the best songs I wrote back in the day were ones either late in the night, or ones I got done with in about a half-hour without much thought. Just happens that way, I guess.

You're getting better all the time. Your use of lighting in this image helps to make the scene more realistic. I haven't even attempted to use reflections yet, and effects in the reflection are supposed to be pretty tricky.

Thanks for the feedback, Habari! I try to put a lot of effort into lighting with each render, but it is still a hit and miss game for me. I really feel great about how this turned out for lighting and I'm glad you agree. I'm looking back at this scene and taking notes for what worked so well.

Maybe instead of playing hit and miss, you should seek out some legit tutorials to help you be more consistent in your lighting choices? I find it helps me find answers to questions that I didn't even know that I had when I'm following some structured learning plans. It will also help to improve your confidence!

Thanks. I've actually read a few tutorials already (though I always know that I can learn more). The lessons really helped elevate me from (bad to okay lighting) to (satisfactory to incredible lighting). I never settle though. I want every render to have incredible lighting. I think it is a pursuit I'll be taking so long as I remain an artist

This render was inspired by Raikoh-illust and he always gives Ahsoka fangs. A lot of people do, but I'm not sure if it was ever made official or not that she had fangs. Regardless, I wanted to give a little more homage to Raikoh's art with the inclusion of her fangs. So far, you're the only one to notice, or at least mention. You have a good eye
