I think part of the reason is people want to watch happy shows or ones that make them feel happy. My Little Pony FiM is a kids show that has more complex problems, moral lessons, and an undemeaning lets learn what a square looks like program. Even the songs, though seemingly silly at first, grow on you.
I would describe it a Dragon Tales but with ponies.

Er... I don't know WHERE to find that show (and I don't think I want to...) but I think I would have one of those kind of faces like if you saw someone puking blood very close to your lap.. like a <:S and :/ kinda face in one. With somewhat of a raised eyebrow o_O.

My terms of cuteness is stuff like... Violator from Spawn or... the Grim Reaper... or a 5 year old girl holding a knife while covered in blood with like a thief in their house with a parent coming down to see the carnage with her in her cute innocent voice saying
"Dey were takin' my wittle teddy beyer and I told them no! *cute little pouty face*"
