Description Alright, so I didn't watch the stream live, but I found the movie on twitch and with the exception of the hyena song being mute thanks to a copyright thing, and lag, I managed to watch it. Here are my thoughts...

Art:
I know they had to do it in a way that was not crazy-high-budget, but I'm not a fan of the animation style. That being said I understand why it is that way. the frame-by-frame, hand drawn animation is very time consuming and expensive. symbol based digital animation is cheaper and faster.

I wasn't a huge fan of some of the design changes. The hyenas look ridiculous. They made Timon a bobble head, The cheetah looks like a jaguar, and the cubs are HUGE! look at some of the frames of Kion or Kiara standing next to Simba, then compare that to Kiara Next to Simba in tlk2 or Simba next to Mufasa in TLK1.

I like the new character designs, however. I like that Kiara's friends aren't the cliche Nala/Sarafina colors that most of the pride landers in past movies have had. And with the exception of the Cheetah looking more like a jaguar, I liked the guard's designs as well. Kion looks cool as well.

The Plot:
Welllllll. Ignoring the fact that the timeline doesn't make sense with tlk2, I found the story to be cute, fun, and not too dumbed down considering this is meant for younger audiences. There's still characters getting hurt, decent villains who are basically out to kill for fun, and all that stuff. I like the concept that every generation had a lion guard, and that it corrupted Scar and made him mad with power. It sort of blows up my entire fan-time-table but whatever. I also like the idea that he picks more than just lions to help protect and represent the Pride Lands. Wish that the Outlander pride of lionesses was the main threat, and I'm hoping at some point in the future of the tv show they include them... but we'll see.

The Characters:
At first I hated the new Kiara because I thought they made her bitchy... But when she's explaining hunting and the circle of life to her friend I felt a bit better about it. But I still prefer the old Kiara... The sheltered, somewhat disobedient Kiara who was over all nice and naive. That being said, The Lion Guard has bothered me with some fun sexist cliches in their female characters. Every single one of them, except Nala, has that irritating teenage girl sass that does a horrible job at sending a positive message about women. I dislike it. You have the stupid one who got stuck on a rock, the bitchy cheetah who made fun of Kion, Kiara who seems to be a bit too keen on the power coming her way, and the other background female that really didn't have much action. The Cheetah is the closest thing to a strong female character and she's rude. Call me a crazy liberal feminist but this bothers me. Other than that, I have already said I like the designs. I love the honey badger, even though he irritated me at first. and over all they kept Simba, Rafiki, Timon, Pumbaa and Nala's personalities the same which I approve of. I like Kion's character. He's strong, cares for those he loves, has a playful side, but still has doubts about the future. It was cool seeing Mufasa again. :3.

The timeline:
-flips a table- I wasn't going to rant about this, but I might as well. I hate the time line for many reasons.
1.) I wanted it to take place with a young-adult kiara and her younger brother Kion. I think it would have been cool to have a cub looking up to his adult sibling. this also would have meant the cameo of the Outlanders who returned to the Pride Lands. You could still have all the new cubs this way to, and have it make more sense, saying that those two girl cubs were offspring from Vitani or the other outlanders. Or hell, maybe even Kiara's cubs.
2.) Kiara and Kion have to be from the same litter. She is not her "older sister" she is his litter mate. Lions can't reproduce for around a year after giving birth, usually when their cubs have grown into adolescence. I use this argument whenever people pull the "kovu and vitani are from different litters" crap. It just biologically doesn't make sense. So if Kion and Kiara are from the same litter, why would they pick Kiara to be queen when there is a healthy male? Not trying to be sexist but a male lion is stronger than a female one and Kiara could have been the lion guard chick or something... Did she win the right to be queen just because she popped out first? I dunno...
3.) Give me the outlanders! The hyenas left! It said so in TLK2. I want to see more Kovu and Vitani. Hell, keep the current time line, and show them to me anyway, that way Nuka could get more screen time. GAH!
ok I'll stop now...

Random other things...
- the songs suck... Can't expect much from a movie to tv show but I was disappointed.
- not the biggest fan of all the Swahili catch-phrases thrown in. But perhaps that'll grow on me.
- Kion said "what the pride lands" instead of "what the fuck" and that made me lol
- I like that the shoulder paw thing fades when he's not in "Guard" mode... I was worried he was just magically born with that thing or something.
- Not a huge concept of magical powers... but whatever, it's a kids show.
- Who would let their young son be a lion guard?
- Fart jokes? Come on. At least Lion King did it in a more classy way.
- How is the honey badger related to a meerkat and warthog?
- I totally had a vulture henchman first! DIZKNEE STOLEDZ MY OC! BAWWWWWW!(though mine, in my head, had a Russian accent)
- Totally tempted to draw lion king again... sigh...must resist
- Stop using "It is time" so much...you're beating it to death. IT looses it's meaning if you say it for everything. -Kion takes a nap- "It is time!" -Simba yawns- "It is time!" -giant ass asteroid hurtles into pride rock, destroying all life on earth- "it is time!"
- Do we still never get to know where the HELL Sarabi went?
- Pretty boss that Scar killed his lion guard. I know they said "destroyed" but it was implied. Pretty awesome. Sure he kicked himself after for not waiting to use his "last evil roar" on Mufasa instead.
- SARABI! WHERE IS YOU!
- I thought female hyenas were in charge? Didn't they have a zoo person they worked with on this?
- Speaking of the hyenas... Are these a new, mutant fresh batch, because our favorite trio was not involved.

I'll add more as I think of them. Looking forward to the show, regardless of some of my opinions. At least it's actually a lion king show that is about the lions...Fucking Timon and Pumbaa...

PEACE!

I actually disagree and here's why... female hyenas are usually in charge of clans. They are the most dominant in their society, even the lowest ranking female is still higher ranking than the highest ranking male. So when she said that I viewed it not as a jab at all males ever in the world, but as a general statement regarding their species dynamic. Basedo on how hyenas actually function it would make sense for her to say this, especially because in the wild the dominant females of the clan are constantly besting up on the less dominant and foolish males that step out of line. And seeing as those working on the lion guard have said that they like to be educational about real animal behavior I saw no problem with this... of course a female hyena would think males are foolish. It's not like it's the creators opinion or all the females in the show would be saying things like that and all the male characters in the show would be bumbling idiots. That's not how it is at all. In fact, most of the male characters are strong and friendly in personality while all the females are either bitchy or whiny(with the exception of Nala and Kiara.) The two female friends of Kiara are female cliches...air heads, care only about their Sharp shiny claws, etc. They are basically the village idiots of the pride. And the cheetah is a strong character but a bitch.

"How is the honey badger related to a meerkat and warthog?"

Bunga is not related to Timon and Pumba.  That's because he's adopted.  Then again, how does adoption even work in the Pride Lands?  Disney, explain that to me.

I actually love your review. A lot of the things that you said I agree on.
I think the Lion Guard was okay but it wasn't the best. I probably will still watch the show.

I do wish Kiara was an adult instead of a cub. I wasn't a fan of her personality. We all know that cub Kiara didn't want to be queen, hated being called princess, and was rebellious which I loved about her. She wasn't that much different as an adult. With that being said, this new personality on show is a bit inconsistent.  I use to dislike the Lion King 2 Kiara but this show made me miss the old one.
The only thing I can think of that made her change is that is maybe it's a sibling rivalry thing since they are the same age.

For the hyenas, I think they are suppose to be teenagers which is the reason why they're small. Yes, the female is dominant which we didn't see in this short movie.

And yes I think it would have been better if this show took place after Simba's Pride. I miss seeing Kovu and Vitani, we all love them so it's disappointing that they weren't included in the show.

My favorite character was the Cheetah, she had that same personality as Vitani almost, very fierce. I found Zuri to be hilarious. She's such a princess with the whining. I could see her being the daughter of Vitani. (Fan idea)

I love Kion because he's very responsible and doesn't get himself into trouble like his father did as cub. He's wise for his age. I think his character development is great. Plus he's just adorable overall.

I do like the idea that the second born cub still has an important responsibility. (in my fan story Kiara's second born cub Zuri, is responsible for protecting the Pridelands, like the Lion guard)

And yes Kiara and Kion are litter mates. If that wasn't the case, Kiara should had been an teenager(12months, which is an older cub) while Kion is still a young cub(3 months). Lioness are pregnant for around 3.5 months.  In the Lion King 2 Kiara was a sub adult, probably around 15-24 months. So she was still a teenager. livingwithlions.org/mara/how-t…

The sizing of Kiara and Kion next to Simba was inaccurate. I think this was an error on the character designer's part. But then again it's low-budget so maybe this was rushed.

I don't get why Sarabi isn't on the show unless she just died. -_-
She wasn't in the second film because her original voice actor passed away  They could've had Oprah play Sarabi in that case.

Anyways, I think the Lion Guard is an alternative story for the Lion King. Also it's more for preschoolers and not so much for families like the Lion King film was.
Who knows, they could be making another Lion King film based on Kovu and Kiara's cubs. They might even make another show target to more of a neutral audience.

I actually really enjoyed "Return of the Roar", and am looking forward to the "Lion Guard" series! Still REALLY hoping it'll inspire you to draw "Lion King" again! It's got some new characters, concepts, premises, and ideas for you to build on, and I'd LOVE to see what you'd come up with from them. Don't resist the temptation! You KNOW you want to!

Honestly, I'm very skeptical of this show. At first, I LOVED the idea of a new Lion King. I was so happy that an amazing series that hasnt been touched in 10 years. I started getting skeptical at the idea that it's a Disney Jr show, then when I saw the way Simba looked and thought he looked very strange, then the last straw was finding out that Kiara is a cub in this show instead of an adult. Now I'm hearing how bad it really is and I don't wanna disappoint myself cause I'm a very dedicated fan of The Lion King franchise. I'll always love all three movies, but I don't know if I'll like this. If the opportunity to watch it presents itself, I'll take it, but I don't think I'll like it.

Warning! Long and boring!

So, I forced myself to lower my expectations for this and, I gotta say, it really wasn't bad. I mean, it wasn't good either? but it wasn't bad. Looking at it from a TLK fan's POV, I hated the mixed-up timeline and stuffs, but, y'know the characters were... Cute?

I didn't mind the badger at first, but the second showing I found him kinda annoying. He's loud and obnoxious and I should be used to it since that's pretty much how all my siblings are, but it just... Irritates me. A lot. The cheetah, I barely payed any attention to, but she did appear to be a stereotypically stuck-up mouth-running quickster. The hippo and the bird, weren't that bad. Probably because they barely had any scenes. Now for Kion. Kion? Kion. I dunno he reminds me of Jake from the Neverland pirates show except with more personality? I got a bad memory. There's also that little thing I called a "cutie mark" before. Yeah, I see now that it's not completely cutie-mark-ish, but. Yeah. I dunno. The thing with the hyenas and the mohawk vulture bothered me. Whatever happened to the Outlanders? And is the mohawk vulture Zazu's nephew (since, y'know, the thing with the badger...)? Do all the birds of the Pridelands have accents?? Are the cubs mutants?

And, yeah, I'm getting a bit carried away now so I'm gonna stop right there!

Anyways, it wasn't bad! It wasn't good either but it wasn't bad! I mean, I liked the extra-backstory n' stuffs! We get to see cubby Kiara again so hopefully more Kovu and his fam too (I really just wanna see Zira hahaho)! Turns out Simba and Nala won't be dying anytime soon! Cute designs! Bright colors!

Yeah!

I'm gonna go now

I liked The Lion Guard, it was cute, the story was good, I loved how we finally get a canon explanation for why Scar went crazy (or at least what aided him in going crazy). And I just love the fact that we finally get more TLK based stuff. That on it's own makes me super happy.

But, like you, my one big pet peeve that sticks out like a sore thumb is the timeline. I would have LOVED for it to be taking place AFTER the second movie. That way Kiara can give big sisterly advice and Kovu could have been another male figure for Kion. (Also there needs to be more huge age gaps in Disney siblings - for myself personally I'm 21 and my little brother is 9, it would have been awesome to have characters to relate to.)

Also it doesn't really make TLK2 make much sense. Like, where was Kion the entire time? Where was he when the huge fight between the Pridelanders & Outlanders broke out? Where was he when Kovu was "living" at Pride Rock? And more importantly you'd think he'd be there for the end when everyone was standing on top of Pride Rock roaring. It was almost like the producers didn't even watch TLK2. *sigh* The only two explanations I have to hush my nit-picking brain is that he's either VERY good at hiding or he was off doing his Lion Guard stuff, maybe away from the Pridelands.

I just can't wait to see all the new fan theories & comics! ^^ I might write a little fanfic on Kion's "disappearance" if it doesn't get covered in the TV show. And like you I hope that they bring in the Outlander lionesses. I read somewhere that Kovu was going to make an appearance...so I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

Wasn't that bad? Call me a child for raging about a movie, but I hate it with all my heart. The hyenas were supposed to be gone only to be replaced by the Outlanders, Kiara's even more annoying, somehow making a honey badger related to Timon's meerkat kin, making the most sexist thing to Nala, make an idea that Scar (quote by Arin/Egoraptor) "destroyed it (the lion guard) with spinach", and made Kiara and Kion in the same litter. If they were in the same litter, like you said before, then they should've made Kion the f***ing lion king and Kiara be the lioness guard! Nature made male lions to be stronger in order to protect the pride and their territory! They obviously not have studied lions or seen a lion documentary and know the facts in front of them. As for Fuji, ARE YOU SUPPOSED TO BE A KING CHEETAH OR A JAGUAR?! Do your f***ing homework, Disney! You disappointed me very much.

I was annoyed at the sexist cliches in the female characters too that being said Fuli is my favourite character but I was so disappointed by Zuri she was just a whiny cub who got stuck on a log and hates bugs Hopefully we'll get some more character development there. I actually like sassy characters usually (Rarity from mlp is a good example of a female sassy character done right, well in my opinion anyway) but I don't like that irritating teenage girl sass type characters, I'd just like to have one female character that is just normal and not bitchy.

As for them picking Kiara as queen and Kion as the lion guard leader (the whole why didn't they pick the male over the female) I think your looking into it too much they are talking lions its a cartoon its not meant to be 100% accurate to real animals and to be honest I would be offended if they choose Kion to be king when Kiara was born first plus it would make LK2 make no sense whatsoever because Kiara was going to be queen its just like how they gave the hyenas a male leader even thought in reality they are lead by females it doesn't bother me too much but they should have made some of the hyenas female in my opinion

I had a lot of the same issues.  The animation and character redesign of a lot of the cannon characters killed me. They could have at least tried to get people that actually SOUND like the original voice actors. And that damn honey badger... I wanted to punt him right into Zira's ignored mouth.  I hope they'll pull in the Outlanders and by the end explain where the Lion Guard goes between now and SP. But seriously, Kiara didn't WANT to be queen! They completely changed her character and I was not at all ok with it.

I'm pretty sure TLK2 has been completely retconned, at least this movie makes it seem so.

I guess what you have to consider is that kids around the age of 5 expect their cartoon characters to have the same long life span as humans. So Simba to them isn't 3 or 4... He's 30. Kion isn't a couple months old, he's 8. So it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility for Kiara to be 9. And to a 5-year-old watching the show, their 6-year-old sibling isn't that much bigger than they are. So if they made Kiara larger than Kion, the creators probably thought there would be some confusion.

That's how I would explain it anyway.

Ze-Ze In reply to ChaosKirin [2015-11-25 11:14:53 +0000 UTC]

yeah that's how I thought of it. One of the people working on the movie said TLG happened After TLK2 and by that I take it that it takes place during the time gap. So if Kion was born just after Kiara met Kovu, then Kiara would have had time to grow into her role as future queen and Kion could have aged up some to be running around the pridelands but not enough to loose his cub spots. So I think move Kion is a bit younger than the first glimpse we get of kiara in TLK2

I just finished it. Zuri was SO annoying but I liked how she was basically the stereotypical 'girly' girl.  Tuufi's personality contrasted with Zuri's as she seemed more caring and less superficial.

I was hoping to see Zira but technically this is supposed to take place between Kiara's childhood and adulthood, I suppose she's training Kovu to kill Simba. The possibilities are endless with the existence of The Lion Guard - the story may even go a different direction.

I did have a 'spot' for Kiara in SP but it was 'refreshing' to see her with a bit more 'depth' to her character, she looked and sounded more mature than her 'cub self' in 'We are One' so it's possible that she's accepted her responsibility as Queen, and maybe meeting Kovu made her feel things she never felt before. Hmmm.  That and sibling relationships.

About Sarabi, It's most likely that she's passed since it's been a while since TLK, probably why they didn't mention her, she's with Mufasa now.

But a few highlights of the movie for me:
Was it just me or did Kion have Zira's 'ear strips'? the 'dark' lines around his ear rims? I thought that was interesting, I actually LOVED seeing that particular feature because I believe Zira and Simba are related, cousins or aunt and nephew.

In the Lion Guard Lair when they showed how Scar was the leader of the Guard before he became the sly and charismatic villain of TLK, when Scar used the roar against his guard, he ended up losing the power, but the aftermath of his crime LITERALLY turned him into the skinny and slouchy snake he is today. Very metaphorical I thought.

Janja, Cheezi and Chungu look like they could be the children of Shenzi, Banzai and Ed...  crazed and mentally unsound look, bangs, large chin. Was it just me?

I saw the trailer for it and i largely agree with you.

Traditionally with Monarchy Males are the ones who take the throne regardless of whether they were born first or last, women were usually relegated to the role of "we'll marry you off to the royalty of some nation we are probably going to fight with in future, just pop out the babies." and that was usually that. (not trying to sound rude, and i apologise if i came across like that.)

That said i do find the idea interesting about a Lion Guard protecting the pride lands, plus it would explain as to what in the name of Mufasa's mane the other males are doing while the lionesses are doing the hunting. plus given the size of the Pride in the films i always wondered why there wasn't more males (This was before i knew anything about actual Lions.) but even so this kind of leads me onto the point i most agree with you on; Kion.

One rule i have always stuck to when thinking of a new OC for any of my projects particularly in established works is "always have an idea about why they don't appear in the actual media." by which i mean explain why they are never mentioned, referenced or shown in anyway, usually for Bleach based stories i will have them on Missions and/ or kidnapped and presumed deceased. now i know with large companies they are always seeking to expand their universes but i hope they explain at the end of the series why Kion is never mentioned in the film at all. (i would say they kill him off but it's a show aimed for young children so i doubt they will kill him off... but then this IS Disney.)

That leads to my next point about the Hyenas, you're right Hyenas are matriarchal, they are reverse lions in that Males do the work while the females get first pick. If they are Smart they may bring in a female Hyena who has been pulling the strings from the shadows and the male they are showing in the trailers is her cub. (Hope that Shenzi is the new leader and she's got a bone to pick with the lions.) I'd also like if the outlanders made an appearance, build them up to be like the sith and show how they are viewed from the eyes of a young cub. With Kiara and Kovu we didn't get to see WHY the two groups detested each other, what did Zira and the others do to get exiled. Little details like that can make them appear more threatening.

One of my main issues was also the lack of female hyenas, especially since Shenzi was the clear leader of the clan in the first movie and females lead the clans in the wild as well.  It doesn't make sense to me that they'd have all boys this time around.  Maybe that was their way of making it more even with the addition of Tiifu and Zuri?  If so it's a piss poor excuse imo but whatever.

I also feel like Simba's kind of a dick?  He's similar to his TLK2 counterpart in that he's protective, but they definitely added more to his judgmental trait and I'm not sure I like that.

Other than that, I enjoyed it for what it was.  I'm hoping that eventually they show what Scar's guard actually looked like outside of the paintings.  I would love to see their full designs.

I don't know how the writers could pridelands up this bad? I hate the new timeline, Kion just doesn't make sense this way, where was he in TK2? Was he killed in some horrible Lion Guard accident before he reached adulthood? I really wanted to see adult Kiara with younger brother Kion. Smh.

YES YES YES! You said some of the exact same things I was thinking and said in my journal! Woo!
I agree about the cubs not being smaller, because they look about half of the size of their parents. And Kiara did piss me off at first, but then she showed how smart she can be when she was training with Tifu. (and I adore Tifu by the way, she's a cutie)

As for Kiara and Kion being siblings, maybe they base how old they are on who came out first at the time of birth. You know, like when twins argue on who was 'older' lol. But I to would love to see a young adult/older teen Kiara instead of cub Kiara. And not to mention her colors look way off from the original design. Just bleh.

Yes on the outlanders! I want to see outlander lions! It wasn't just hyenas. There had to have been other followers of Scar...

And for the honey badger thing, from what I understand Timon and Pumbaa had adopted Bunga at some point. That's why he calls them uncles.

As for the whole Lion King 2 thing, it seems like what Disney is doing with The Lion Guard is making it so that Lion King 2 never happened, there fore potentially not canon anymore. Which sucks. I'm really hoping to see Kiara meet Kovu again some how. We all know the original voice of adult Kovu will not be in the show...and...yeah.

As for the whole Scar story, yeah I agree that was pretty boss that he became so evil that he destroyed his own Lion Guard. I hope we get to see flash backs of them!! I really wanna see their designs so there will be more new lions to draw!

Kovu was an orphan according to producers of SP. Yeah, Kiara and Kion realistically would be from the same litter, but it's an animated TV show so I'm guessing in TLG they're a year or two a part. I want to know where Sarabi is too! I guess she's deceased as it's Disney's way of implying it, or she could make an appearance in the show and be mentioned in a flash back. I liked the Timon and Pumbaa show growing up^^. I still haven't seen TLG yet .

"Do we still never get to know where the HELL Sarabi went?" Her voice actress died and Disney wants to dance around that idk. o.o; But yeah Sarabi just going poof annoys me so muchhhh.

I heard about the hyena thing like wtf. I mean, my local zoo says they are one of the few in this country "crazy enough" to have hyenas (I guess they are a pain? I think he said something about the females being a handful but I didn't get details) but it's kinda common knowledge that the females are in charge. o.o; Like were the hyenas in TLG the rejects from the old clan? LOL

I agree with you a lot here. I still loved it. It's the Lion King. BBut they could have done some stuff differently.

Are you done drawing for the lion king? I so loved your work!

I also noticed that part of the Outlands now appears to be where the wildebeest gorge used to be?

ahh, i really liked the movie and i really liked tiifu and zuri's designs! <3

but, it did have it's flaws. sarabi, the way zuri acts and talks, timon's head, the over-used "it is time," the location of the outlands, etc.

but, it was pretty good overall, for the target age. X3

you raise some good points I did a review too if you'd like to see
The Lion Guard-review The Lion guard  was cute. I was a bit perplexed by the fact Simba&Nalas body proportions are smaller then in the actual films. I understand that this is going to be a kids show but Kion And Kiara shouldn't look that big next to their parents. Apart from that Kion was very cute and I love the little honey badger Bunga. Still not sure about how Kiara's personality is going to go in the show compared to how she was in Simba's pride, but I will have to wait to see more of her to find out.
Not thrilled that they portrayed Vultures as bad guys but whatever.
Seriously I get that these birds have a minor role in the show and being scavengers it is natural Disney would have them tag team with the hyenas..but just no. I mean for crying outloud they made vultures lovable in the jungle book movies, they couldn't do that here?
Anyway Kion is adorable and I am looking forward to seeing more of him.Love that James Earl Jones is  reprising his role as the voice of Mufas

I think I read somewhere that one of the people who worked on the show claimed that Kiara is older than Kion, and that the events take place between the time she meets Kovu and the time we see her grow into a young adult in TLK 2.  I can't find the source, though, so I can't be sure; I can't see the show for another 30 minutes or so.  Regardless, the timeline does bother me to no end, and I agree with you in that they should have made Kiara much obviously older or something other than what they did.  Honestly I don't see why they couldn't have made the show about Kiara and Kovu's heir(s) instead...it would have made much more sense and it still would have been capable of captivating the target audience.

Because it would be boring to make another LK story just about Kiara's cubs and hard to pull off. Young kids wouldn't know who Kiara is due to SP being a sequel in the 90's and her not being popular. Plus, SP wasn't very successful, there is a new target audience that currently love super hero type stuff. Disney have taken advantage of that fact and Simba would be old if Kiara reigned as queen and I don't think kings or queens abdicate in TLK. So it wouldn't be TLK without Simba, by creating Kion it gives LK spin offs a second chance at success. Also, they're showing second-borns can be just as important as first borns.
