Description I was just exploring the net in order to hunt some inspiration and I found this incredibly beautiful portrait of Tilda Swinton ([link] ). I couldn’t resist the immediate temptation to paint her.

Seems I’m feeling more comfortable with PS. Does it mean I’m improving? Unbelievable......

Isn't she the woman who plays Doctor Strange's teacher in the movie of the same name? The bald woman who allow reappears in Endgame and talks to the Hulk?

Yes, she played her! ... the Ancient One (I had to google it ). I liked her very much in that role.

Heee, thank you!^^

Yeah, I wish that the progress was much quicker.....pffff, impossible dream. Today I was looking through my gallery and I felt really miserable about it. Hm, that's the coming fall talking, I suppose....^^

RiHouston In reply to Aldriann [2012-09-20 20:45:48 +0000 UTC]

If the progress was quick, we wouldn't appreciate it as much! Also, I had thought about going the 'quick and easy' route, but decided it was more worthwhile to really learn what I could. I hope that in the end my decision will make me better for it! XD

Yeah, I've deleted a lot of my earlier stuff in my gallery...I know how you feel about facing your earlier work, but also, it feels good to know you are moving forward at the same time. I keep thinking if only I grasped some of these concepts sooner!

Hey, what's the quick and easy route?(: I think that your decision will prove fruitful. Quick and easy routes are usually also quite sheer, and it's very easy to fall down.^^

*sighs* Yeah, I wish I could delete half of my gallery as well. Me the same: I always rant why I didn't know this or that sooner. Though if I didn't do those first works, I would have never figured out what's wrong with it! Quite the paradox. Moreover, the oldest things I did about two months ago and now I can't look at them. :/ It's rather insane, yeah, but I suppose that’s how the progress goes. Yay to progress!!!

Ah, the quick and easy route was to trace stuff for practice and get my art start that way. I saw a few people who did that who were able to successfully pull away from the tracing and do their own thing, but I was afraid of forming a bad habit for myself. I decided rather than relying on something else, that it was better to rely on myself and the learning curve has been huge considering I really sucked at scale and anatomy at the start. If only perspective would be so kind to help me a little more by making sense I would feel even more accomplished...

The only reason why I deleted those previous works from deviantArt was because I felt that they were misrepresenting my current works. You know, they kinda hang out on the right side of the screen as thumbnails for others to view which is why I took them offline. I keep all my files and drawings, I just don't have them in deviantArt any longer. It is good to see how far you progress, but there has been a big leap in my work over this year and I am hoping that my current gallery reflects my current level of ability now. Yay to progress indeed!

Oh, oh, tracing - I didn't even think of it. Yeah - I see your point and I think it's one billion times better than starting with tracing. The anatomy and shape stuff goes through the head and hand both, so I'm rather sceptical regarding this sort of practise. Your supporter - here! (: Yep - perspective - that's the fish. Maybe we shall bribe it to show at least a little bit of mercy on us....

I see. Good manoeuvre! Now you only need to do more and more and more drawings and paintings to fill your gallery again. Heee, that would be fun, no?

I am glad I went the painful route to get all the mistakes out of the way first. Better to look like a n00b in the beginning than to be all over the place when you do try to start working 100% on your own! Oh yes, I am busy drawing and learning watercolors, just nothing truly worthy of submitting yet since they are practices. A few pieces will be ready for sharing soon though, but they are all needing a little more time before that will happen. XD

Yeah, I very much agree with you (linguistic question: is there any difference between noob and newb? Urban dictionary is my loyal friend in here, and according its definition of 'noob', I wouldn't say that it is a proper term labelling you under any conditions...(: )

Oh, dear, watercolours....well - I wish you the best of lucks! It's pretty tough medium to learn with - my miserable experience has just spoken..XD May I be nosy? What are you painting? Portraits? Landscapes? Me = very curious...

RiHouston In reply to Aldriann [2012-09-21 23:13:26 +0000 UTC]

No, they are all interchangable! And I do feel a bit inexperienced and new even though I've been at it a year. Maybe in another year I'll fell like I hit amatuer level, but I do appreciate the compliment! XD

Ah, watercolors. I have a love hate relationship with them. I'd like to love them, but they hate me, though I am starting to get the hang of it a little better after a month-woot! I am painting different things. I practice with landscapes since I feel it is my strong suit. I am doing nature studies out in my yard. It is great! I am working up the courage to try to paint horses since they are my neighbors. Of course, I've been excited since I found an owl in the neighborhood and we have plenty of hawks, so maybe I'll start small first! XD I also do designs, as in prints which are influenced by textiles and architectural designs I saw when I visited India. Also, playing around with some mendhi patterns since I find it relaxing and flowing-it is a good warmup for both my fingers and my mind since I keep it very loose and make everything work off of something else. I'll post some works that I finish, but that is the trouble, watercolors take patience and drying time...but I don't mind, I have patience apparently. Who knew?

Aldriann In reply to RiHouston [2012-09-22 20:06:03 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I see. So even Urban dictionary is not absolutely right. Poor me, poor me...^^

Oh, that's really wonderful! Painting in nature and painting nature is soooo great! Don't be afraid of horses - they're not biting! XD And I'm really interested in those designs and patterns you do - perhaps because I intensively loved Indian culture one time and that admiration for their original art hasn't completely left me yet. I'll be definitely excited to see it when you post it.

Yeah - watercolours and patience. Maybe that's why I was such a looser with it(: .

I promise to share the designs then! XD Ah, I just suck with freehand drawing animals. I can rock inanimate objects, but people and animals pwn me. Also, you need some preplanning to paint watercolors and I always think of adding those things in the middle of it all which isn't possible. I will just have to take a picture of the horse running around (they barrel race at sunset) and make do with a photo reference. I'll still paint it outside, but the phot will at least stay still for me! XD

Yes pleaaase!(: That's the cliché thing - but of course you'll get better at that planning after you gain more experience. Practise, practise, practise - and I won't have any time until next summer - damn it! Grrrrr...... /: Yeah, horses don't like silent and still standing, that I know very well...XD I think that's a good idea - and it would be a life drawing anyway! XD

You know how it is with us artists...ride a high one day, and down in the dumps the next! Such a rollercoaster ride, but it is a lot of fun!

Cookies, I have so many! Come here and eat some with me! I have tea, coffee and good ole milk to go along with them! Hurry!
