unpeopled streets. The curtains
have smoothly withdrawn
to expose the picture window.

From the seventh floor
the view plunges vertiginously
into the canyon of the narrow street.

Already the morning has laid out
my solitude, that dull robe
that smothers my invisible days.

the brickwork walling the street
fades toward nonentity. Uncertainties
of recollection taunt me.

Briefly I wonder if you have already stirred,
before I recollect how this indifferent spring
morning marks for you
the onset of a winter night.

Completely separated. You will never
be an intimate part of me again.
