Description
ALECTOR at PATREON
Hey, everyone! My Patreon is ready and launched! Please take a look and consider supporting me there. <3
On Patreon, I will share with you WIPs, early access to art, insights to world building and how I work on comic projects and much more! Once Haunter of Dreams is ready to launch, the community on Patreon will see the pages first before they get posted into the public. I have even more with you to share and hope to bring you joy!
With Patreon, you will become part of a community of supporters with whom I can share insights to the Making Of, Work in Progress, Sketches, Thoughts and a deeper insight to my worldbuilding ventures. You can dive into the my mind and learn more about Yria. I think itβs going to be a ton of fun! With your support, you help me continue focus on telling Myreβs adventure and all characters around her.
And more! Since I have plenty more ideas for single illustrations outside my comic projects, this will be the platform where I will, in time, be able to give tutorials and early access to art, way before it gets posted to the public.
I would also like to give something back to the community and share my experiences and gained knowledge about art, storytelling, character design and the making of comics.
Today, starting off with the smallest tier, a brand new Plant Spirit is waiting for you to be picked up as preview and high res!
Thank you so much for your support!

This are good news, but I think that you should include videos, tutorials, PSD archives and brushes. Probably what interests us most is to learn to draw so good like you. It is only my personal idea.

Just some friendly advice: make sure you spread to other avenues as well like SubscribeStar and possibly Gumroad: After the controversy with Sargon's de-platforming it doesn't hurt to be on the safe side.
Otherwise, best of luck to ya! " )

Oh, what happened there? I'm not aware of those news. I was thinking of Gumroad as well, possibly for things such as resources and brushes, later.

It may not directly effect artist (yet), but long story short a youtube political commentator was ousted by Patreon because he "violated" their terms of service without warning. Basically, he said the "N" word in the middle of an hour long live-stream (he used used the term at raciest ironically enough) and it was enough to get him kicked off with zero warning.
I still have my patreon for the moment (it's not a terrible platform), but like others I'm concerned about getting nailed for arbitrary reasons so I'm moving over to SubscribeStar to keep my options open (you'll have to tell me about Gumroad, I haven't fully explored that option).
Here's some of my sources if you want to start somewhere (and if you find anything noteworthy or have some news that might contradict what I have here I'm all ears).

Anyway, I don't want to be a killjoy, just thought you may want to be aware as a fellow content creator.

After searching google a bit, it seems that subscribestar is relatively new and already comes with different opinions about it. One article I found in particular would let me shy away from using it personally.
I'm rather sceptical to begin with, when it comes to the variety of services that exist on the internet and that offer people a way of making money. But I've used Patreon as a supporter for a few years now and the artists that I'm supporting don't seem to have experienced any problems with their content (or their payments).
On the other hand I've seen artists come to and leave Patreon, because it didn't have the effect they were hoping for in a certain period of time. The folks from Patreon give advice on how to build a proper community (via blog entries, newsletters etc) and let creators know that it takes time/patience and work to reach certain goals (at least that is my perception as a patron/supporter). And I think that this is really it - meaning: Constantly working on building your community of supporters and interact with them (on some level).
@ : I think it's a great idea that you're trying this and I can imagine this will work fine for you and the art that you create.

I agree, Patreon is pretty good as a platform (I've used it myself for about a year now). I'm just concerned Patreon is overstepping into some dangerous practices (monopoly and censorship is bad for everyone if not handled right).
Also agree that there's nothing wrong with being skeptical of other services as well: I personally chose Subscribestar because I trust some of the creators that I follow done their research and even then I'll keep my eye on what's going on (though there was the legitimate issue back in December after activist shut it down temporarily, but they seem to be up and running again).
Thanks for your input! Do you have a gist on what the article was about? I can't seem to open it here " /
