Description A good friend of mine told me earlier that he really enjoyed seeing my sketches, and suggested that I posted more of them. So here we go...

One of the things that I enjoy doing as a warm-up or as a means of study is to re-draw my older work. Why would I do that? well, because it allows me to make comparisons, teach myself what to look for.. what looks good, and what needs work. Also, it gives me the chance to challenge myself with images that would never work! Either an issue with composition, or simply stiff, and un-natural anatomy. As I grow as an artist, its not often that I fall into that trap, so it is a big challenge to try to make a decent piece of art out of something that I know doesnt work.

This piece is a nice example of that exact thing. The sketch on the right is probably something like 5-7 years old, the one on the left is pretty new.

the goal was to match the pose and composition as much as possible, and hopefully create a looser more natural pose, with a more fluid composition.

the character is Aspen Mathews from the comic book "fathom"

love to hear your thoughts!

Wow, you can hardly tell they were drawn by the same person. That sounds like a really fun exercise.

WOW you've come so far! Dynamic and curvy, and the line thickness really makes it 3dimensional... post more, they are fun!

It's amazing how just finishing the sketch more makes it look impressive. There's a lot more movement in the lines, and it's easy to see you're a much more confident artist now. Major improvement on the anatomy!

I think it's crazy how much your definition of a "sketch" has evolved in those 5-7 years. What you consider a sketch now I would consider a finished piece at my level of skill.

I think it's amazing how much influence Turner had on your older work when the newer one feels very Jay Scott Campbell. I don't know that that is something I normally pick up from you . Any how there is a ton of growth in the anatomy department (the boobs in the older one are funny) and the new one isn't stiff at all.

I guess at the time I drew it I was on a campbell kick or something. I do get that from time to time.My style really doesnt differ that much from his "cept, I reckon he's a bit better than me, lol", so I think when I draw women more curvy it comes off that way.

but yeah, turner was all I knew back in the day, I never would have even gotten into comics when I did if it hadnt been for turners work, that I found totally by chance flipping through my buddies wizard magazine.

blah blah blah...

sorry about that.

lol! it's all good. I really think most of your work is your own thing and it doesn't feel like you have borrowed to heavily from any influences. it just looks like your style.

I do the exact same thing several times over. I keep learning new things to apply to old concepts. I like how you have worked out some issues here.

lol, well this is a really extreme example. usually I'll go back to a sketch after a year or so, its rare that I go back to a sketch this old... in fact I think this is the only time ive attempted a redraw on such an old piece.

I understand when you move forward there's little use looking back. For me my ambition is usually greater than my skill, so I've been catching up my ideas to my current skill. Also it's for my own project so it's useful.
