Description This is the clean up of my character design assignment for class. Our assignment was to create an anthropomorphic character and show them at 5 different stages in life (baby, child, teenager, adult, and senior). I had a lot of fun working with this one, partly because I got the chance to colour it and also because I got to make a character out of my favorite animal.

If you have any constructive comments please let me know, don't be afraid to criticize. I'd like it to look it's best when I hand it in.

This looks excellent. Each of the different stages are so full of personality! You can almost see a story hidden underneath these pictures.

Looks good! I love the drawings themselves.
Something is bugging me about the teenager stage, though. It feels out of place in this lineup. Unless that's your aim, and is part of his story, it feels very haughty and sophisticated. Mostly in the pose, but also with his expression. It feels jolty, as I can't see how an adventurous, outgoing child would become a tough and rough, hardened man-rhino with this stage in between.

Well thank you. Back when I first started this assignment, I was told that the teenage drawing would be the hardest one, and it definitely was. And I do agree with you, I feel that it is the weakest one of these five drawings.

I think I see what you're saying, about the teenage drawing looking a little too sophisticated. I won't go into his full story, but I made it with the intent that he would get cockier as he got closer to adulthood, and the teenager was supposed to have a subtle smirk on his face. But I guess that didn't come across as clearly as I intended.

If I ever work with this guy again, which I hope to do someday, I will definitely keep what you said in mind. Thank you for your input, I greatly appreciate it.

Glad I could be of some help. With your comment here I can see it more how it was intended, but, my first impression still sticks strong in my mind.

Also, I forgot to mention - I love that adult stage. Cool pose and expression.

This is smashing; you've done a great job of making each life stage look incredibly distinct, with perfectly-judged expressions and wonderfully detailed little idiosyncrasies (the baby chewing on the machete is a particularly amusing touch), but it's always recognisably the same character. His overall design is splendid too, and the toony colour work reallly suits him. Great stuff!

Thanks, I had to redraw each one so many times to get them just right.

i love seeing this sort of thing, it's nice to develop a character further than just one drawing.

Thanks, it is a lot of fun to develop a character in this method, as it forces you to think about their backstory.

I already have the rough linework but this is great stuff. Very distinctive attitudes and characterization. My favourite of all is the adult version, absolutely loaded with white hunter arrogance. A real Wilbur Smith vibe.I dunno how iconic they want it but maybe hit the "straights and curves" a bit more and simplify some of the detail around the horn and appendages. Excellent job!

Thanks, I really appreciate the constructive comments. I see what you mean about the straights and curves, I guess I'll have to watch out for that more in future work

That's ok.You're welcome. I'm no character designer, let's get that straight. The few things I've picked up include straights and curves and things like silhouettes , easy readability, strong shapes etc. But that's about it. I would gladly hang your piece on my wall. I was just trying my best to be a nit-picking , hair-splitting asshole.
