"Well, then." Edward Hyde looked down at the man on the street. "It seems we have a bit of a dilemma on our hands. I want to kill you, but for some reason, you find fault with this little activity. Now, how are we going to come to a conclusion?" Edward idly twirled his walking-stick as he paced. "At the moment, you are in a rather tight position. You can be a nuisance defending yourself, but the instant you drop your guard and try to get up-" he swung the heavy stick through the air.
"Crack. Pleasant for me, decidedly unpleasant for you."
"Please." The man was doing his best to stay calm, but he couldn't keep from trembling. "You have to let me go. You can't just kill someone out in the open."
"Oh, you'll find that I can. You should have stayed in your cozy Westminster flat." Edward grinned. "Or wherever you live. It certainly isn't here. What would a man of your standing be doing out in the dregs of society, anyway?"
This earned a glare. "My business is my own."
Edward gave the stick a jovial tap. "Quite right! That's the spirit. I could be convinced to let you live."
The man's ears perked at those words. "Convinced? How much do you want? I've twenty quid on me, but I could get more-"
Edward shook his head. "I don't need money. I've loads of the stuff already. What I need is a reason to let you go.”
The man stared up at Edward. "A reason to let me live? I'd be harder pressed to find a reason for you to kill me."
Edward looked annoyed. "We already have a reason to kill you: it would amuse me."
That was disconcerting. The man's brain fumbled. Dozens of pleas and arguments flooded his mind, but he shooed each away. The regular thoughts of intrinsic value and moral ideology would obviously prove futile. His assailant would kill him with no more regret and remorse than a man watching an opera. His death was little more than an evening's entertainment, This mind game little but an overture.
He watched Edward pace. When their eyes met, the killer grinned, as if to say "Take your time, we've all night."
What could you say to someone like this?

I don't normally write stuff for my deviations, but this little story popped into my head while I was drawing. It's got me thinking. What would I do in that man's place..?
