Description This is the last surviving drawing of my great-grandfather Nikolai Nikulin, the man from whom I believe part of my art talent was genetically passed down; and this is the story of his life…

Nikolai's parents were Russian, but he was born in China and spoke Chinese quite well. When he was 17 years old, he was given a choice- to go study in: America or Soviet Russia.
Being a true patriot he chose Russia.
Time passed and he became a famous railroad engineer. He connected trains together, doubling their power and brought Siberian and Chinese cities together.
He defended Russia when the Chinese attacked the Soviet Railroad and got the OKDVA (Special West Red Soviet army) medal for his heroism- here it is, in his photo: [link]
His drawing skill was so great that he was allowed to draw Lenin’s portrait, and for this he received an incredible photographic album portraying Lenin’s death, which is still held by my grandparents in Novokuznetsk. At the peak of his career, Nikolai was awarded the golden star as “a hero of the Soviet Union” from Stalin, for his achievements in engineering.

The world fell in 1937, when Stalin’s madness created the orders that declared millions of Russians as “enemies of the people” and sentenced them to execution in Soviet labor camps.
When Stalin's “police” was taking everybody from the streets, Nikolai never expected to be taken too. One night he had a strange dream, where he saw his head being half-shaven and on the very next day the police broke down the doors and took him in.
He was sentenced to a death in a Soviet labor camp as “An enemy of the state and a Chinese spy”. His wife appealed for justice and truth, sending Stalin a letter with Nikolai’s medals and drawings, but this letter was intercepted and forever lost.
After Stalin’s death, my great grand mother received a piece of paper that cleared Nikolai of all accusations and a note that his body was “buried in Russia”.

----

This upload is dedicated to him and all the others who stood for unity of mankind yet fell against injustice, to carry on their noble spirit, and so that the value of freedom may never again be forgotten, erased or taken from us.

I've been planning on getting a tattoo when I turn 18 for my mom, Rosa. This is exactly what I've been looking for!

My sister is going to draw the artwork. I will definitely give this to her for inspiration.

It's an amazing piece of work.

WOW his story is saddening but his work is beautiful, I Guess when you look at a drawing or picture you see it and assume that the picture reflects the artists mood yet you never think of how they are before or after that piece be it light or dark. Your comments are a great eye opener to anyone who see's this and realises because some1 was happy and well at one point they aren't always, there emotions change, they suffer and they are after all only people like you and me not just artists.
(if that makes anny sense at all, i meann we both are artist but not just artists)

i was only 5 years old back in 1995 when we (my familly) immigrated from the falling appart soviet union to israel. (what a choice, huh..)...
my mom still talks like a good soviet woman 0_0 and her opinions are still like she was taught back there.. i think she is a bit brain washed.
anyway, technicly israel is built upon socialism-komunism, here it survived (officially) for 100 years. (the unique life-style "kolchos").

it is a very sad story of pure injustice. i salute your grandfathers bravery and his great talent showed above!

Wow... my great grandfather also was a train engineer in Russia. But he was neither a Sowjet nor a Chinese... he was a Nazi. Somehow he managed to escape though... and left his family behind.

Well... it's nazi blood running through my veins but my first name is from Russia.
If my grandfather (who went to university in Russia and worked as a translator and driver for the Nazis) had not wanted to start a new life in Bavaria after the war, he probably would be living in America today.

Sometimes war is not as easy to look through as it seems to.
Strange stories are made when the world is at its worst.

My second first name (how do you call that having several first names?) is Nicolai by the way... and I love roses, too.
So I guess I like your great grandfather ^^

Very interesting. I've heard of your grandpa before. You'll be wondering probably

I know the regime and the injustice which still exists in our world.

We should remember and admire people like your grandfather. (and never trust authoritarian leaders )
