Description 1. Sketch in PaintTool Sai
2. Lineart
3. Moving to Photoshop for coloring. Shadows on a Multiply layer, colors don't matter at this point
4. Shadows 2
5. Flat colors. We only need these for fast selections later so it's important to make every color on a separate layer
6. Using flat colors selections as masks for gradient maps
7. Adding reflected lights on a Linear Dodge layer using 'Shadows 2' layer selection as a mask
8. Coloring lines and adding some extra details/tweaks
9. Back to PaintTool Sai for lineart
10. Back to Photoshop. Using the same process to color/shade the webs

This is a visually stunning piece, and I want to say I absolutely love the depth and lighting in it. The emotion you were aiming for is clear and well executed, and amplified by the webbing in the foreground and background of the image.

Having said that, here are my concerns which are on the technical side of things.

The inclusion of a belly button mark makes me think this suit's material is extremely thin, or Spidey or someone has painted on this suit. (I mean, both are a possibility. Maybe he's worn the suit well past it's practical life. Or, maybe he's just coming back from an art installation that was about him, and the artist painted the suit on. Weirder things have happened in the Marvel universe. Weirder things have happened to Peter Parker.)

The lack of webbing in the costume (Which I see in one step, but not elsewhere) makes me feel like it was missed, and makes the image incomplete for me. I know there have been many versions of the suit, but the iconic blue and red seem like a vital part is missing when the webbing design over it is neglected.

The rest fall under artistic license for me, such as the size of those thighs. That spider is thick and it's believable simply due to the amount of use his legs get. As as character, though, I don't believe Spider-man was ever meant to be on the overly buff side of things. This again is a minor thing, and up to artistic vision.

I'd like to conclude that again, this piece is amazing. I love that you've shown us the process, and I love that use of his actual webbing. Spider-man is my all time favourite hero and you've really done him justice here.

This piece is phenomenal. I love the dynamic pose and expression. The webbings make the piece also pop out. I love how well you draw as I can tell that you've studied anatomy intensely. I honestly don't know how else you could improve on this piece coming from someone who has just begun on this drawing journey so I could only dream of making a piece like this. I guess I would try to add a few more highlights around his thighs to show more light there, but other than that it's perfect. Are there any resources or tips you could provide on how you learned how to color/draw detailed anatomy? Of course it takes time, practice, studying, and drawing alot, but if you could tell me anything else I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks and have a good day!

I think that this is a very awesome and amazing masterpiece that blew my mind and the art looks so amazingly good and I totally dig it on the execution of the step by step idea to add the colors and the shading to make it look likes in real life like reflecting from the light above like it was a comic book art print like 1974's the amazing spider-man# 125 or a random issue featuring the man himself, spider-man from saving new york to an honorary member of the Avengers, Spider-man to the whole world to honor him as a hero

For the 4th step do you paint in the white again again??

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AlexRedfish In reply to RobertSalgado [2019-01-13 14:14:28 +0000 UTC]

The 4th step is on a separate layer, so there're 2 shadow layers in total.

These are two separate shading layers. They are combined later before step 6. I'll try to make it a bit clearer next time.

I prefer the way the lineart brushes work in PaintTool Sai, they appear to be a bit crisper. Just a personal preference

I see so many people coloring in this way, starting with greyscale first. I was always under the impression that doing so was merely one way of going about coloring, whereas I prefer using different shades of the same color when creating depth in my work. More and more then, I have been thinking about coloring a picture in this way, I think I will try it with my next picture.

Thanks a lot for sharing this progressive picture, it will definitely help me out a lot

Btw, that's some really nice anatomy work on Spidey, the muscles look great and the pose is interesting. Cool idea with the framing webs too, it adds well to the composition of the overall picture, including the darker areas around the center

I was going to write a critique but it’s apparently 100 words minimum. But any ways I assume that you are a professional working in the industry. You are a far more advanced artist than I am. I think the piece, the one before the final is more eyecatching, the web stands out more, or the contrast is more pleasing to the eye. But then again I assume you want spiderman to be the first thing that catches the eye. So I wrote a whole paragraph only to communicate nothing. You’re work is very good

AlexRedfish In reply to keeprecording [2019-01-09 21:31:23 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the feedback! I always good to hear what other people think, regardless of the skill level.
I like the contrast on this shot as well and it was hard to make a decision to make the webs a bit more restrained. As you mentioned, they draw too much attention and I wanted Spider-man to be the one in focus.

AlexRedfish In reply to AvantiNostalgia [2019-01-09 21:08:42 +0000 UTC]
