How do you get everything so smooth? what kinda tools are used to sculpt it?

Alright cool thanks, I'd like to improve my own scuplting if i can...also do ur pieces stay together pretty well while ur making them in figure form, no issues with height or it tipping? i may try and get some super sculpey

Well height and stability are always a pre-sculpting issue. Obviously our ovens are only so big, if it's too tall I plan to make it sections that can be baked separately. The stability of a piece should be a priority as well, I use the method of mounting the armature into the base I'm working on, I do this measuring out enough extra length at the end of a leg to fit into the hole I have drilled in the base. The pressure of the wood on the armature is usually enough to hold it in place without using an adhesive, but with larger size come the need to use glue. There is also the armature stand, which consists of a bar that stretches out and supports the armature from the back, I personally find this a bit more difficult to work around. Also if you have not already started using aluminum wire I would highly recommend switching, at these sizes it has more tensile strength than steel and is far easier to cut when you need to break a piece down for casting.

can you bake with wire in the piece?

Absolutely not a problem, in fact I suggest not baking without an underlying armature or structure of some kind, as the very act of baking softens Sculpey enough that high weight or super thin areas are practically guaranteed to crack or warp.

ok cool, will something like floral wire work? I have wire from the hardware sore as well, that's probably better. It's by OOK i believe

I suppose anything that won't burst into flames at 250 degrees would do.

At least the pose should make this a relatively easy mold to make.

He is very very cool indeed. ^_^ Is this the original? what are the hair and club made of? Its an odd color, I'm curious.

Yes indeed, this is the original, the flame/hair and the club/Kanabo are made of Castilene wax which doesn't really need an armature.

I've never worked with wax before, what is Castaline like? is the consistency like sculpey?

Being a wax it has to warm to work, it comes in three different grades of hardness. I use medium and hard, they both set harder than sculpey and in general you don't have to worry about accidentaly ruining any details. I completely hated it at first but as I'm getting it now and accessories like wings etc are almost impossible sculpey.

So how does the wax set? you mentioned it
sets harder than sculpey, you mean harder than
after sculpey is baked?

Sculpey unbaked compared to the wax when it cools.
