Ratty was starting to get old, although she’d never let anyone say that to her face. She was still in great condition for 18 years old, regularly competing and still enjoying her job, but a freak knock in the field had left her lame and off work for months. At the time, she’d been checked by every vet the Adams’ could get their hands on, but to no avail, they all just gave some empty platitudes and said they family needed to just wait and hope for the best. That hadn’t sat well with Stephanie, who struggled with a need to control situations at the best of times, and made it much harder to answer her child Bea’s questions about when she’d be able to ride her beloved mare again.

Eventually the day had come where, when bringing out hay to the fields, Stephanie was met with the familiar old sight of Ratty bombing towards her. She’d let out a sigh of relief before realising she had to get her wits about her; the mare had absolutely no consideration for personal space at the best of times and, after months of feeling under the weather, today was likely to be no better. Stephanie surveyed the mare as she stood eating, the swelling had clearly gone down and her general condition was starting to look much better; not too long before she could be slowly brought back into work.

Her rehabilitation went well, Bea was a good and gentle rider and ratty seemed to appreciate having a job again. As the weeks went by, Stephanie’s mind turned to competing. She didn’t think Ratty was ready for a big show, or even a ridden one at that, but she knew the mare would appreciate getting out of the yard. Eventually she found a small show with a liberty class, and signed the are up in a heatbeat, she definitely had some moves…

Soon enough, the day of the show rolled round. Ratty had loaded into the trailer unusually well and stood still for the whole journey, something Stephanie greatly appreciated given she’d gotten out of practice carting ponies about. They reached the show and unloaded Ratty into one of the holding paddocks, careful not to let her get too close to any of the other horses, then waited for her class to be called. Then, it was time. Stephanie walked the mare over to the liberty paddock and let her loose, with the rest of the family looking anxiously over the fence. There was nothing to worry about, though, as soon as she was free Ratty exploded off and reeled about having a great time. The family smiled. Their old mare was back.
