She gave birth before the snows had finished melting. The nearby stream was cold with snow; there had been several frosts already that had killed the tops of the growing grass, leaving paths of brown cutting through the fresh green undergrowth. The other mares would want to wait a month or more before dropping their foals, but the young Arctic mare was comfortable in cold weather, and she knew her foal would be, too. He came into the world covered in a double layer of soft down; his shoulders were covered with what would eventually be an entire mane of downy fluff.

He wasn’t as pale as his mother. Her coat was mostly white with pale patches of a kind of pinkish cream. Though definitely creamy, his coat solid with only a vague hint of pink that became visible as it dried and began to puff out. As a stallion, he would be a magnificent creamy golden with a mane and tail that ran silver; silver it would be in the moonlight, and silver would be the mane of downy fluff once it had come in. As the young mare nuzzled and licked her foal dry, she thought, too, of the swirling snows of winter and the change it brought to those of her kind. He would be almost white in the snow months, kin to the snowstorms and blizzards, brother to the relentless north wind. She stopped for a moment and looked at him as he tottered upwards, struggling to stand on unsteady legs. He seems so fragile in the moment that the wind could have blown him away. Hastily, the mare decided to catch him with a name: Aquillonius - he who faced the north wind.
