OVERVIEW: CALM - VETERAN - MOTHERLY
Basic: Been there, done that. Nothing phases Markie. She'd just as gladly take a nap in the sunshine as she would hurtle herself up a mountain at her owner's request, and though she's not the youngest or the brightest, she's paid for herself by standing up to the harsh Michigan snows when SCS needs a more hearty horse, or by raising foals with good manners and nice color patterns. She's very gentle, and wouldn't so much as hurt a fly. Sometimes she's pulled out of rest to compete in halter classes, as she can stack up nicely, and other times, she serves as a sort of warden, where SCS riders can trust their horse to be sure-footed and unshakeable even in the worst weather and conditions.
Quirks:
Much prefers simpler, bland foods to any treats. Hay, most of all.
Seems to actually like the challenge of foot-deep snow and harsh sleet. Never phased by any of the weather conditions on SCS grounds, and doesn't mind to stay outside through all of it.
Has a strange tendency to throw her shoes, so she's usually left barefoot.
Slow-moving, but solid and steadfast. This would be the tortoise that wins the race, not the hare.
History: Most of Markie's history is unknown, but here's what SCS does know: in her previous home, Markie was a broodmare that only came out of field rest to occasionally serve as as sure-footed trail mount when she needed the extra exercise or the team was down a horse. She's quite small and hardy, and served them well when they needed an older, more steady creature to take the junior riders out on some of the hilly, rocky trails that wound up into the mountainous area near the stables. Eventually the stables acquired a round of newer, younger horses, and though they were sad to see her go, realized that Markie was better suited to a more active or more attentive home rather than being left to languish in the fields except when she was sometimes needed. Thus she came to SCS, who recognized her worth as a relatively bombproof older horse able to tote around low-level riders and continue her restful job as a pretty-colored momma.
