Description I drew a human female!
I was working on this all day yesterday and part of today.. instead of doing something productive.  I've been continuing to try to learn humans and know I should be practicing females too, so here you have one.   Its a character design I thought up for my book, and after too much thought I've decided this design will replace the one of the original character.  I had trouble with getting the characters colour tones to match the backgrounds, so that's the best I could come up with.  Photoshop Elements 11 has no white balance function. >:/

I don't like her hand, so besides that critiques are welcome! *Edit* I've fixed the lighting on her hand because it made it look like the thumb was on the wrong side. XD

I agree for most of Mrowgi comment

Also how to say it... The other fingers are not oriented "correctly". You drawed the nails as seen from profil, though it should be something like 3/4 from "above"/under.

I miss vocabulary to explain another point about the palm/flesh.

Oh, I see now!  Thank you for letting me know.  I guess I couldn't see it because I knew the lines were there, even though now that I look at it, I can't really see them either. XD

Thank you!

Thank you!  I haven't been doing them very long, and am rather self-conscious about them, so that means a lot to me.

Oh, you're welcome! ^^
I can see a lot of potential in your human art; I really like the way you draw them.
You are definitely doing quite well for someone that does not draw them as often.

I know how that is, I used to do the same thing when I was into flipnotes; I even went as far as hating some of the people's art I watched because I didn't like how they were drawing humans instead of wolves. X'D

Really? That's cool; can't wait to see it! >v<
May I ask for a slight spoiler on what you may be drawing?

Thanks! Its just my character Shuster playing with a bow again. XD

I think I told them that I liked their wolves better.

Oh, cool. ^^ What kind of layout are you planning on?

Oh, it's okay! ;a; I was wondering about the type of background, mostly.

I'm lazy I guess. XD

Mrowgi In reply to Aliuh [2015-10-30 04:53:03 +0000 UTC]

XD I sometimes like the simplicity of a more plain background, though; it keeps the attention on the character/focus of what you are getting at rather than distracting, as some artists do. Such as how you are focusing on your characters in this picture, for example, instead of working really hard on a detailed backdrop for him as well.
It really depends on how it's done, I guess. ^^

Aliuh In reply to Mrowgi [2015-11-04 14:56:07 +0000 UTC]

True enough. XD I do like simple backgrounds sometimes too, but I'm afraid I'll become so lazy I'll never do detailed ones.

Hopefully.  I do want to practice and get better at it, but I get frustrated when it doesn't go well. XD  I just need to get past that I guess.

Yeah. owo
It's not exactly 'encouraging' when you spend a ton of time, with much difficulty, to see it in the end and you're just not satisfied since it didn't come out the way you'd hoped. =w=;
I hate those moments. quq That's when you go 'oh, forget this!' and finish it anyway just to have it done and over with, hoping for a better result next go around.

It does take practice, though; I think when you're younger it's easier to look past all the flaws since you're just drawing and enjoying yourself instead of focusing on making it believable and or accurate, you know?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Aliuh In reply to Mrowgi [2015-11-18 19:14:54 +0000 UTC]

Quite true.  Although I usually end up giving up all together and not finish things.

I would have to agree with that too. XD

XD Yeah, sometimes that happens; or a lot of times.

If I notice the smallest flaw, I usually can't bare looking at my drawing very much. It's sad. =v=;

I agreed with Mrowgi's comment but I can't see the comment I added on his/her.

Here is part of what I added :

"Also how to say it... The other fingers are not oriented "correctly".

like 3/4 from "above"/under.

Hope it will be of some "help" one way or another

I see. I did adjust the finger nail a bit, but it does still look wrong. XD

Laikian In reply to Aliuh [2015-10-23 05:35:32 +0000 UTC]

I like to draw hands ^^ It is thanks to a teacher in middle school. I kind of got "caught" in doing the subject, so I happend to draw not only two hands "drawing", but about a ten or more tinier hands in various positions. How should I put it ? I had just discovered that hands were "talking" a lot lot lot more on their own than anything I previously
imagined.

So just try a similar subject :
1st) picture your (own or someone's) hands drawing
2nd) draw many scrap of hands, even unfinished ones
3rd) don't hesitate to look into comics, BD, some manga... because there're lot of interesting hands in them

Well, I guess people most of time look at faces in real life, so we notice "less" how hands work/are in real life. It's another story in pictures, because the whole body talks a scene, a situation, an emotion, etc.

Last piece of advice : don't give up Working/sweating shall become a part of pleasure over the time passing

As for you hand...

Actually the second to fourth fingers' last phalanx shouldn't be visible. Only their first ones by "face" and a little of their second phalanxes "from under" + "more toward the exterior".

The thumb looks "OK" but is still wrong because this position is not natural to hold a weight. Moreover this type of lamp is "a bit" too heavier to do "so". In real life, the thumb comes to "close"(secure) the grip of other fingers from under. So either you close the grip and put the thumb horizontally in front of the other fingers' seconf phalanx ; or you can almost mask just the index finger's first phalanx "by" the side, with just the last thumb phalanx, also don't forget to make the thumb bend two times -- it will come stand naturally on the knob.

I hope this will help you a little

PS : Your lamp has a "cap", so the holding/right hand and part of the forearm must not recieve as much light as the face.

Lucky you. XD I wish I liked drawing hands.

I can usually sketch hands alright if I have a reference, but for some reason I seem to chose difficult references for paintings like this one. XD
Thank for for the tips! I'll try to fix it if I get the energy.  Its hard to alter at this point because of the shading technique I used.

Laikian In reply to Aliuh [2015-10-24 00:43:14 +0000 UTC]

I reckon I gave a lot of "tips" Just remember that when one grip something with your hand, the nails tend to naturally "face" the body. When there's weight, the more little the object/grip, the less someone in front of the person will see his/her nails.

I took a tour of others' hands sketches :
anevis.deviantart.com/art/Hand… this one show you some natural placements/positions
spectrum-vii.deviantart.com/ar… this one have a hand (2;2) which might fit in your drawing with some little adaptations As you see the orientation of the forearm, the nails follow the exact same direction

I took another look to your hand, just make the first phalanxes lower. The natural grip is closer to the first phalanxes articulations.

Aliuh In reply to Laikian [2015-10-27 20:02:42 +0000 UTC]

That's a good rule to remember! Thanks, and thank you for the examples too!

I see what I have to fix now.  But whether I'll get the energy to fix it is another thing. XD

Hello, I think you had a really productive day, on the contrary! That's a beautiful job, I could not event imagine one could do this with Photoshop Elements. Hands are always tricky (if that's the proper word), this one is not so bad, maybe the problem come from the thumb, I don't know! Good job anyway!
