“It has been a long time hasn’t it, Epona?”

The lone traveler spoke quietly to his steed. Link reflected on how it has been years since he last seen Hyrule Castle. Years leading the army against the dark forces far away in the Gerudo desert and only a few scant months leave in the forest village of his childhood. Over ten years since he fought Ganon. A smile brushed his lips when he remembered meeting the beautiful and exotic princess, Zelda. Being able to serve as her vassal gave him a focus to keep living his life.

She was of course, lovely and strong, everything he hoped for in a life-long companion and partner. He wondered if she changed since he left, the five times he saw her over the past four years had been too brief to tell. Now she is the Queen of Hyrule and well-known as a Warrior Mage; a reputation gained through successfully defending her people from the monsters that managed to slip through Link’s line of defense. At least the war was over now. Perhaps now he would have the chance to officially court her.

He rode Epona through the gate, entering Hyrule Town, greeting the various people he passed along the way. The soldier at the castle entrance took Epona and gestured for Link to enter, the guard spoke with a wink, “She’s in the counsel room.”

Link could do little more than nod as he ran up the steps. He entered the counsel room to find Zelda surrounded by stacks of paper and books, a scribe at her right. Ink was smudged on her face, a strand of hair escaping from its tie. Link spoke, “Your Highness?”

She answered exasperated, without looking up, “Yes, what is it? I had issued orders not to be disturbed; this must be important.”

Link smirked, “Well, if you treat all your vassals that way, maybe I should just leave.”

“Well- I was a little short; now how may I, oh,” she looked up, her eyes widening, “Link!”

“Hello Zelda.”

She rushed forward and gave her friend a quick hug, “I thought you were to return in a few months’ time!”

He smiled, “Inactivity doesn’t seem to suit me. Now I think you need a break.”

“Well I have to-,“ she started.
The elderly scribe interrupted, “Go on, dear. This can wait.”
As the queen left to change into clothing better suited for riding, the scribe spoke in a conspiratorial whisper, “She’s been at it for days, waking up before dawn and not retiring to bed until well past midnight. She needs to remember to enjoy her life; that life is not just about duty.”

Link grinned, “Then I’ll just have to serve as the enjoyable distraction, while the castle gets ready for tonight. Does she even realize what today is?”

The scribe shook his head, “I don’t think she does.”

“Good.”

The soldier and queen rode off into the field. Link served as the best kind of distraction for the Queen, by encouraging her to live in the moment. They visited her friends in the market and at Lon Lon Ranch, raced along the grassy hills and finally settled down at a peaceful place along the hills outside of the forest.

Zelda murmured, “We have to go back.”

“Soon, but not quite yet. Will you at least watch the sunset with me?”

She smiled, “Well, since you asked; how could I say no?”

The two sat side-by-side in a comfortable silence. Zelda shivered once in a cold breeze. After a brief internal debate, Link slipped his arm around Zelda’s shoulders. There was a surprised tone in Zelda’s voice, “This feels right.”

Link laughed, “We have been friends for over ten years!”

“I know, I just mean, I never thought that-,” she took a deep breath, “I’m glad that you’re back.”

“Me too. Happy Birthday, My Queen.”

I finally finished!
This is the long overdue request I owe ~PrissyKissy for being the closest to catching my 10,000 pageview mark from forever ago. She just requested something Zelink and sunset related. This was extremely fun to draw and the scene just flowed into my mind upon reading that brief prompt. I might just have to make a more full-fledged story from it someday.

So thank you for inspiring me so much Lori!
