Epsilon Eridani b

constellation: Eridanus
star name: Epsilon Eridani
star type: K2 type, main sequence
system name: Epsilon Eridani
distance from earth: 10.5 ly

planet name: Epsilon Eridani b
class: gas giant
sub class: jovian
mass: 1.55 jupiter masses
atm. comp.: hydrogen, helium, other elements and compounds
satellites: possibly 10 and more
semi-major axis: 3.38-3.50 au
year: 2,502-2,630 earth days

not much is known about the world due to its star's high magnetic activity, the young age of the system, the planet's ellusive orbital elements and existing structures in the system that suggests that the planet does not exist. so unfortunately i can't give many stats about the planet. some scientists say that the planet doesn't even exist, so the planet's status still remains as unconfirmed.

epsilon eridani b is a jovian class planet orbiting the young star epsilon eridani at a distance from its star roughly the same as jupiter from the sun. the epsilon eridani system is the closest known exo planetery system to earth. because the system is young, the planet would be in the process of forming along with its family of moons. here we see the planet with two lava moons and an entourage of asteroid moons. the planet should have an unusually high number of asteroids, because of its eccentric orbit around the star near an asteroid belt, and also because its a gas giant. the planets atmosphere would be volatie and hot as it begins to change and reach a cool state of chemical equilibrium. there would also be large volumes of reflecting dust and ionised gas in the system giving the space around it an orange hue and the bright young star would illuminate the system with a bright glow.

you would easily notice a few bright stars in the sky despite the bright space around the system. these bright stars are stars near the system in space. the first and most obvious one would be the striking sirius near the bottom left of the planet. it would only be a mear seven light years from the system making it the brightest star in the sky, just like here on earth. the positions of the stars in the sky of these planets would be somewhat different from how we see them in our skies on earth, and their brightness would change somewhat. sirius would be noticably brighter. other stars in the image include procyon near the top right of the planet, zaniah to the top left of the planet and subra to the bottom right of the planet. unfortunately, you would not be able to see our sun, due to the angle of the image, but it would appear as a bright yellow star in the northern hemisphere of the planets.

hello, here i've recreated the planet epsilon eridani b and its family of moons in my dipiction of it. i like the result! probably my best exoplanet yet! i really enjoyed making it! i think the light rays are a nice little touch to the image, but i am simply stunned by the planet and its rings as i feel it just fits in with the image better than any other gas giant i've made!
comments and critiques are most welcome and appreciated and i really hope you guys like the image!

Overall

Vision

Originality

Technique

Impact

I found this piece to be among the best from the artist. On top of that, I am also fond of the planet and star used as the subject matter. There are several reasons I admire this particular work best.

I rate it a 5 on vision because it takes imagination to conceptualize what a known, but vaguely specified, exoplanet may be like. The said vision also look distinct yet complementary to planets in our solar system.

A ringed planet isn't completely original, but given the good mix of red and orange colors, realistic pattern of the rings, and moons this warranted a rating in 4.5 for all other categories to me. This would be an example when a space-themed artist bring their "A" game in my book. Hypothetically more could be done, but it'd be unnecessary and may veer from what is known about Epsilon Eridani's planet.

Oooh this is so beautiful and realistic! Have you done J1407b? I would love to see how that would turn out, with its massive ring system <3

oh thank you. unfortunately no, i've kinda taken a step back from exoplanets for a while to work on some older projects. maybe in the future i could try?

I think this is my favorite out of the planets you based on real exoplanets. Β They recently had a contest that named it Aeir and the sun Ran from Norse myth.

When they find more planets around this star I'd definitely like to see your take on them too.

Wow! Thanks for creating this! I love that this is the closest confirmed Exoplanet to Earth. Only 10 Light Years away. The International Astronomical Union is allowing people to vote on a Proper Name for this Exoplanet (starting today). Can I use this image to help promote the voting? Yuri's Night proposed the name "Dijla" for this exoplanet as it is the Arabic name for the Euphrates River (Eridiani is Latin for 'river'). Let me know if we can use this image to help get the public excited about Exoworlds!!! All the best, Loretta Whitesides (@gmail.com)

thank you.
i think that's a pretty decent name for the planet. i like names have meaning to them. go ahead and use the artwork, anything to help promote educating the public on space.

I hope the real Epsilon Eridani b looks as incredile as this one =3 As well as being able to see it with my own eyes from that distance! ^^

Very cool man! I dig the red color of the planet (it's my favorite color)! But the rings seem a little off. Perhaps it's the amount of noise that you added to them?

Alpha-Element In reply to TheSPunk3d [2012-08-11 12:39:35 +0000 UTC]

glag you like it! and i purposely put that much noise into the rings to show that they're still young and forming.
