Roaming the forests of Western Europe is a shaggy animal that’s somewhat familiar to us. The shovel boar is a common herbivore in Europe. Its appearance hasn’t changed too drastically from its ancestors; however these animals are mainly herbivorous unlike their omnivorous ancestors, and they possess long tusks that can grow up to 24 inches. These tusks are mainly used to dig up and uproot tubers, competition between males, and defense against predators.
The shovel boar lives in harems that consists of a dominant male, several females, and their piglets. These animals spend most of their time fighting, wallowing in mud, or sniffing out the various fungi, tubers, fruit, and shoots that are scattered across the forest floor.
