Description

Here’s the fourth portrait of my "Drawing Deviants“ series (Link: fav.me/dbsn8vw).

I came across Emilia’s  DA account and fell in love with her photos (and her cat). First I couldn’t really decide which one to use for my stylized portrait ‘cause I liked so many, but then I thought the photo “Wintry” (Link: fav.me/dbs7lng) was just perfect for a cool toned winter scene. (btw: After completing the drawing and looking at my other portraits I funnily noticed that all of the pictures somehow represent a different season..I really didn’t plan it )

So thank you so much for your beautiful photos, Emilia, I really hope you like the drawing!

Hewwo my fellow deviant , I was brought here from    and I'm here to attempt to make a constructive critique .
I absolutely adore this portrait . Realism is to real so I always try to not draw it as much as possible haha . In this piece you have captured the beauty of the art of Realism including , not over shading ,  choosing the correct color pallet and putting actual life into this piece . One of my only issues with this piece is the hat . Now my issue with the hat is that all the fluff fuzzy , ahhhh whats the word . Wait - fur is like held back and it really doesn't pop out much in the front , which I know is hard to capture in realism but still . The anatomy was pretty much on point  , and I love the detail on the hair  .

And I have one question to ask you ! HOw do you even draw lips , they look so amazing !!!! I probably struggle with doing that ( drawing lips ) because my style is really cartoony and I try to avoid realism as much as possible .

I hope you take my critique well . Have a nice day

Hello hello Thank you so much, I'm happy that you like so many things about it! You're right about the fur, I could have made it "pop out" more. It was my first attempt to try something like fur, so next time I'll consider your advice! I think it is great that you have a cartoony style and understand that you want to stay away from realism. I am still trying to figure out where I want my art style to go, so maybe it'll move away from realism again.. who knows Thanks again for your kind words!

Hey! I'm from ProjectComment.
First of all, I LOVE this piece. It looks absolutely fantastic. The colors are understated and pleasing and the anatomy is very realistic.
One thing I think could be changed is that you could add some darker lines in her hair and define her clothes and the background more, because they're very blurry and don't stand out very much. As well, on the left side of her face there's a strange bump below her cheekbone and I'm not sure why it's there. Also, another thing I think could be a little better is the shading on her face, because there are a lot of white highlights. For the shading, I'd suggest using a darker and warmer tone for the darker parts and a lighter and cooler tone for the highlights (although it also depends on the lighting, but since I can't see a reason for the white highlights, I think for this piece the shading should be changed a bit.)
But I overall, this piece is absolutely fantastic– it has wonderful anatomy and colors as well as detail. Overall, amazing job, and I can't wait to see more of your art in the future!

Thank you for your kind feedback!

You're right about the darker lines in the hair. Every time I draw something I try to make the shadows deeper and deeper 'cause people tell me so, but somehow I still tend to keep it too light ^^ Next time I'll try again! Concerning the background: it's pretty much supposed to be blurry because the focus is on the character. I think if I actually drew the background very sharp and detailed too, the image would be overloaded and the eye wouldn't know what to look at. But it's good to know that others feel that it could also be sharper!

Regarding the strange bump, I guess I tried to make her face shape a bit differently and a bit more defined. But I can see what you mean here, I may have overdone it

So do you think I should add more warmth to the shadows even though it's supposed to be cool toned? I guess I was too scared to use dark reds in a winter scene. And I actually tried to make the white parts blue, but obviously they came out too light/less saturated   Thanks for pointing it out!

I'm glad you like it, thank you for the helpful feedback!

You're so welcome! Yeah, I agree that a very sharp background would be a bit confusing– I just think it should be a little clearer, even if the figure is the focus. And regarding the shadows and highlights, now I totally see what you were going for, although when I first saw it it reminded me a bit of those Instagram makeup artists who highlight their faces with bright white and it looks weird XD I really like the idea of the blue/white in the winter scene, I'd just suggest maybe making those highlights brighter or more clearly placed. I really hope the feedback helps you Keep drawing!
