You're welcome! I like La Boheme and Pavarotti was great as Rudolfo especially when he sang his aria Che gelida manina which he did effortlessly, but my favorite Puccini opera of all time is Turandot.

Ack, I better stop now or else I'll fill your ears with too much opera talk!

...I have the Boheme's CD version with Pavarotti... ....He was great... ...But honestly I also like Placido Domingo very much, he has so mach *passion* too... ...And Carreras? ....He is so *perfect*, a perfect balance of tones.... ....Corelli wasn't bad too...
I love Tosca, Boheme too; I love Verdi's operas too: Rigoletto, La Traviata, Trovatore... ...And I guess Aida is wonderful....
I don't know very well Turandot, I didn't *find* that much in Utube but I love *Nessun dorma*.... ....Maybe I'll buy this one too....
....So now, who "fills someone's ears with too much opera talk"??...

Did I hear opera talk? I always thought Domingo was excellent in the dramatic roles (I loved him in Zeffirelli's La Traviata,) and one of the Verdi operas I love is Otello, a role I think Domingo was great in. The lovely duet Gia nella notte densa gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it.

Corelli was magnificent (he was quite handsome too!) and I think there is a utube vid of him playing Calaf in Turandot opposite Birgit Nilsson, but I could be wrong and the video may have been removed already since it's been a while since I watched it.

Carreras seems to have the 'lighter' voice of the group, but he's an excellent Don Jose in Carmen. If you haven't already, check out Manon Lescaut and listen to Donna non vidi mai; it's a wonderful tenor aria and it's always nice to listen to it because of how simple and sweepingly romantic it is for such a short aria.

There's a whole bunch of videos I've been watching on utube lately, but they're mainly the German romantic operas. Ack, you've made me talk a lot!

I don't know very well Otello, but I'm *learning* a lot about operas, I'll listen it...
I realized how much this music is *close* to me...
...I think Corelli's Calaf version is still in Utube, in my favourites too, I hope so!!
Next Jennuary if I have even one chance, I'll GO TO SEE RIGOLETTO to the Scala!!!!
...I will go to check Donna non vidi mai right now!!

You're lucky if you get a chance to see Rigoletto at La Scala, and I'll be jealous! Just kidding, I'll be happy for you instead! It's been a while since I last looked at news from La Scala, but is Maestro Muti still the music director?

I hope you enjoyed Donna non vidi mai!

...No, the director will be James Conlon, (from New York) Muti left the Scala in the 2005.
"Donna non vidi mai" is very good, but I didn't find a very good *version* of it; I'll try again... ...But thank you, I like it!

You're welcome! Thanks for the Scala info. See, that's how far behind I am on the International Opera scene since they don't usually broadcast the operas staged at the other opera houses outside of the US. When they do, it's usually on the public broadcasting channels and usually a year after the premiere. It's almost always the Met broadcasts I usually watch, but most of the operas I tend to watch are usually bits and pieces on Utube.

It's a bit hard to find a good version of "Donna non vidi mai", especially a version done by a good tenor since most of the tenors today (in my opinion) seems to lack an intensity or weight, and sometimes stability in their voices. It's nice to hear lyrical tenors, but when it's a dramatic role, I guess I tend to want a darker, solid feel. I think that's one of the reasons I'm fond of listening to the older tenors and Heldentenors, but it's sometimes a mixed bag. Marcelo Alvarez has a good version, and from the older tenors, I know there's a Corelli version of "Donna non vidi mai" and Jussi Bjorling also has a pretty nice version.

....UTube... ....Could you give me the link to your page?... ...In case, I'm ----> [link]
...I agree with you; I heard some *new* (or not that old )tenore, but I'm not so excited about Roberto Alagna or Juan Diego Florez (which is not so bad but...)... ...and Rolando VillazΓ³n?
...I don't know, still I like Domingo, Carreras and Pavarotti...
Thank you for the *tip* about Alvarez, I enjoyed his voice; and about Corelli... ...Also I like his voice which is so *personal*... ...The funny thing is about something you cannot *hear* in Corelli's voice because you're not Italian... ...He has a *light speech defect* with his *S*, I ALWAYS HEAR THAT.... ....But I always *forgive* him!!!....
...Oh well, thank you for your conversation: it is a pleasure!

Thank you too! I'm happy to talk about this! Unfortunately, I don't have a Utube page. I usually go by what I hear on the radio and check if there's anything on Utube. I often check out the opera cds at our public library (since they're somewhat expensive!)and if I'm lucky, I'll also find dvds of operas I haven't seen.

I agree with you with the old tenors; I still like Domingo, Pavarotti, and Carreras. I'm just waiting for today's tenors to reach their level. I guess we'll just have to wait.

Thank you for that little information on Corelli; I've always wondered what it was about his voice that I couldn't figure out because I read somewhere that he was always nervous before & during a live performance and sometimes I can hear a bit of it in his voice. But it's his wonderful power and intensity that he brought to his singing that makes me overlook his little 'flaws'. I did find that Otello was the only Verdi role Corelli never performed live, but he did sing on occasion some pieces from it. Enjoy! Rudolph Bing Gala: Otello "Gia nella notte densa"

Thank you for the link to *GiΓ  nella notte densa*!! It is very interesting! ...I never heard that much about *Otello*, just the famous *Credo*...
...There is a good *video-DVD* about Tosca, [link] I enjoyed to watch...
...About Corelli, I also found this *funny* thing: "In a 'Trovatore' production in Naples, Corelli angrily attacked a student in a third-tier box who heckled him during the performance. Outraged, Corelli bounded backstage, ran up three flights of stairs to the box and, finding the door locked, broke it down with his shoulder. In his Manrico costume, complete with sword, Corelli charged at the young man, but was restrained by two ushers. He was so infuriated that he lost his voice for 20 minutes, returning to the stage just in time to sing what he always considered his greatest ever rendition of 'Di quella pira.'..." ... ...

That's an interesting and funny story. I guess the student deserved it for being so rude in the first place. It reminds me of the other stories I've read of the funny stuff that went on when Corelli and Birgit Nilsson performed together. They both tried to outsing each other.

Thank you for the link; I remember that video. I thought Raimondi's Scarpia and his 'Te Deum' was pretty good, and I liked how they filmed the opera on location.

*They both tried to outsing*; do you mean both tried to sing *over* the other one?... ...I believe Corelli was *proud* of his powerful voice, he was right but also I'm sure sometime his voice was a *bit too much*... ---> [link] ...Anyway, in general, I really like him!
...About that Raimondi's Scarpia, his "Te Deum"... ...yes, it is great, I have that video and I love to watch it...

squidink In reply to altergromit [2009-11-14 19:48:54 +0000 UTC]

Yes! They tried to sing over the other one, and they had a bit of an argument over who was trying to hold a note longer than the other, but it made for great opera especially when they were performing Turandot together. I like Corelli as well for his tone and I guess there's an *electric* quality in his voice, the kind that makes you want to hear it over and over again. Thank you for the link of "Di quella pira". Here, he sounds like he's rushing it and doing the technical fireworks at the same time , but the effect makes it exciting.

Right, like I always found Domingo's voice (his *E*) like an iron's blade...
I heard from a friend who knows many interesting funny *stories* about opera's singers, a funny thing about Montserrat Caballè. He said one day she was singing the final part of Tosca (Tosca's *fault*)... ...They say the *mattress was *too thick* and the *effect* was of a *bouncy Tosca*... ...Also they say she almost laught, so... ...She must have a *good sense of humor*!! ...This is what I heard, then who knows!
