Description
It had been a few days since Whiskey was captured and taken to a small ranch. There had been some other horses in neighboring pastures, but the stallion had no interest in making friends with domesticated horses. He wasn’t one of them, and he had to get back to his herd. To Syria. He knew by now she had to of delivered the foal if she made it. The poor stallion had no idea that the others had found her. He just hoped they were all alright. There was no stallion to protect them.
Though the stallion was just standing by himself as he was kept in a small pasture. He tried finding ways to escape, but nothing. The only thing that was changing was that the air was getting thinner, the stallion’s coat was getting thicker, and the temperature was dropping. Winter was finally upon them. Whiskey sighed as he looked out in the distance, “I got to get out of here before the first snow hits…” he said knowing his only chance was quickly approaching.
“Grandpa it’s been a few days. It’s bound to snow at any time…we have to let him go. You promised.” The girl spoke as she followed her grandfather, “What if he had a herd? Foals?” she spoke before her grandfather had turned around stopping her.
“It was only him that day. Sure he might have a herd, but we don’t know. It’s just a few more days, now why don’t you go and do those chores I already asked you to do?” he said giving her no choice. The girl frowned then left as the man just watched her leave before grabbing a lead rope. Then he made his way over to the stallion, “Alright boy….”
Syria was still adjusting to being back outside amongst nature and other horses. Canela seemed to be very nervous and skittish about just about everything, but her mother was patient and understanding. Though it was hard on the both of them as they often stayed a small distance from the others while they adjusted. Though the mare was always looking around hoping she would see Whiskey emerge, but he never did.
Starling let out a small sigh as she looked over at Syria deciding to make her way over, “I know it must be difficult adjusting after being in that cave for so long, but the first snow is upon us. I’m afraid we’d have to move shortly for shelter..” she said respecting Syria as the leader especially in Whiskey’s absence. Though after a moment she spoke again, “He’ll come back..I-I know he will. All he wants is to see you again…and to meet his daughter..even if he doesn’t know it yet.”
Syria just looked over at Starling as she approached before she looked around again, but she remained silent for the time being. Eventually she sighed, “Very well. We’ll leave the area before sundown.” she said before looking at the mare once more, “I know he will…I just worry for him..so much has happened since the fire. So much has changed. Everything was fine one moment, and the next…”
“Everything will be fine. What matters is that everyone survived that fire. He’ll be back.” Starling had spoke before she gently nuzzled Syria’s side. Though Syria just faintly flinched still adjusting to everything. She wasn’t used to someone nuzzling her. Star noticed as she gave a small nod and made her way back to the others.
The colts were all playing and messing around while Cascade watched over them. Mainly her son more than the other two, but when Starling came back over she looked in her direction, “What’s her deal?” she said with a snort, “and why did you let her take charge? Look at her.” she said as she looked over at Syria.
Starling just snorted. What was her deal? “Give her a break Cass. She was trapped for weeks inside of a cave where there was no light, no food, and no water. Not only that, but she also had to deliver her daughter alone. She did what she had to survive that fire even if it meant getting separated from Whiskey and the colts.” she said over the mares attitude. “She was here before all of us. Her daughter is offspring of the herd leader. Now I don’t know what your deal is, but I am over it.” she said almost about to nip the brumby mare. Neither of them noticed that the colts had been watching or even that Syria had made her way over with the small filly beside her.
“Star is right. Now you can drop the attitude, or leave. I know Whiskey likes to give others a chance, but I am willing to do the opposite if it comes to it. If I hear anymore of this, then there will be punishment. Do what’s best for your son and change your attitude. I will not blame your son if you are forced to leave. It will be because of you.” she spoke in a firm tone warning the brumby mare before she relaxed some, “Now it’s time we find a place to stay before the first snow hits which is soon. I know a place that will work for the time being now let’s go before it gets any later.”
Cascade just snorted as she said nothing. No one did. Star just looked at the mare before she gathered the colts as they made their leave. Syria led the small herd to where they were going, but she only hoped Whiskey would find them. The only thing she wanted was to see him again. Canela just stayed next to her mother’s side as she looked back at the colts for a moment then up at her mother, “What is snow?” she hesitantly asked.
Syria was almost surprised since the filly didn’t really talk much. Though she looked at the filly and nuzzled her, “You’ll find out soon enough little one. Until then let’s just get to our new home for the time being.” she said softly.
As for the colts, they just walked with each other with Cascade and Star behind them. “Is she always like that?” Altan had asked. He was a little nervous about Syria due to how she spoke to his mother, but he didn’t know her like the other two did.
“I’ve never seen her like that.” Cornelian spoke as he just jumped around a little bit, “She took me in when I was lost. Same with Cyril.” he said though his attention had gone to the little filly, “What about her though? She’s a filly, and I’ve never seen her talk or even leave Syria’s side..” he said thinking it was a little odd.
Starling had listened in on the colts as she sighed, “She’ll come around soon boys. She’s still learning and adjusting about everything. She doesn’t know nature like you three do. Not only that, but she is only a couple weeks old. Treat her well. Yes she is a filly, but that shouldn’t matter if she ever wants to play.”
The colts just looked at each other before Altan spoke, “But she’s a girl…we don’t want to play girl games…” he said as the other two looked like they agreed with him.
Syria could hear the conversation, but she ignored it. Canela just kept her head down some. Starling just sighed, “Maybe she’ll play rough like you three do, but she is also the lead’s daughter.”
“But Whiskey isn’t even here.” Altan said seeming confused.
“Doesn’t matter. He will come back. Now let’s just keep up so that we can get to our new home before sundown, shall we?” The colts just nodded as not a word more was said. Starling just continued walking as Cascade had been following just behind her. Not a sound had come from her since Syria had given her a warning. Although for Starling, she hoped Whiskey would be back soon much like the others, but she was also a bit nervous. Her and the stallion had seemed to have formed a bond almost similar to the one he seemed to have with Syria.
Though the others didn’t know that the speckled mare was expecting with the stallion’s foal. She only hoped things would go smoothly when the others would find out. Her and Syria seemed to have the same beliefs and interest in the herd, but she just hoped it wouldn’t change that. She tried her best helping the mare adjust by giving her and her filly space and time.
As for Whiskey, the man had entered the small pasture tossing a rope around the stallion’s neck. Whiskey attempted to get out of it, but it was just as useless as it was the day he was caught. Though he still didn’t give up even though the man was able to get close and place a lead rope on the rope halter as he removed the rope from the stallion’s neck. Though Whiskey didn’t stop giving a fight. “Stubborn stallion. Rearing and kicking won’t do you no good.” The man huffed as he kept his grip on the rope.
Though the girl had come back around to see what was happening, “Grandpa!?” The sudden voice distracted the man as Whiskey reared once more. The man had quickly refocused as he pulled on the rope which caused it to break. This was Whiskey’s one chance as he saw the rope break. By now it had started snowing. Winter had begun. Whiskey saw the rope break, and without hesitation the moment his hooves had made contact with the earth below him, he ran.
Unfortunately for the man, he had left the gate open as the girl was in the way. Though she didn’t hesitate to jump out of the path of the stallion once she realized what had happened. Whiskey knew he couldn’t stop even if the girl didn’t get out of the way quick enough. The stallion just galloped away from the small ranch and back into the wild where he belonged. The just focused on getting as far away from there as quick as possible, but the snow quickly made it hard to see.
Whiskey had slowed down and decided to find some shelter. He’d have to try his best to get back home with his herd. Syria never left his mind, but he still worried about the others. Either way the stallion found some brush to shelter in as well as a couple trees. Though the rope halter was still on him as Whiskey spent some time rubbing it until the rope eventually broke causing the halter to fall onto the ground. He was officially free once more.
Though Whiskey was still angered that his mane and tail was cut. He didn’t know why it was done, but it felt like something was taken from him. He knew it would grow back, but it still frustrated the stallion. Though Whiskey had laid down and taken cover getting some rest before spending the next day traveling back home while also trying to find the food and water he needed.
