Description
Whiskey was once again alone as he trekked alongside the river. It didn’t take long for the river to freeze up, and even Whiskey was impacted by the cold weather. This wasn’t his first winter, but with his mane being cut, it just didn’t feel the same. He hated the odd feeling, but he knew he had to get back to his herd. That was what kept him going, but the stallion was still new to the area. With the snow, he had no idea where he was.
Before long Whiskey found it best to just stop and look around, but there was nothing that felt familiar with him. Though he didn’t get a good enough look around due to the snowflakes getting in his eyes. Wouldn’t have been a problem if it weren’t for those pesky humans. Whiskey just let out a small sigh as he could see his breath as he did so.
The stallion decided it might be best to stop and rest for the time being as he made his way into some trees. Once he had, Whiskey felt a bit better once the snow wasn’t in his face any longer. Whiskey found a spot to lay down as he closed his eyes to get some much needed rest before he continued on his way back home. He just hoped he was close.
Whiskey hadn’t realized he slept the rest of the day until he felt it get colder causing the stallion to wake up. The sun was setting which caused Whiskey to get up quickly. He looked around before he tried making his way back to the river. Usually he would hear the water running down river, but the only thing he heard was the the wind.
Luckily he seemed to find his way to the river only to find it had froze up during the time he slept. The stallion let out a small sigh before he stomped his hoof on the ice. He hoped he would be able to break a hole in it to allow him to get a drink that he needed. Luckily the ice was thin enough to allow him to do so after a few attempts. Despite the water being cold, it was refreshing. Though the stallion tensed up when he realized he wasn’t alone.
When Whiskey looked up, he realized it was a mare. A chestnut roan. Wavy hair. Whiskey thought she looked familiar, but with the snow and the little bit of sunlight left, he couldn’t pin point how he knew this mare. Though she didn’t seem to notice him until she almost walked into him. “O-oh…I’m sorry..it’s hard to see in the dark especially with the snow getting your face..” she said before quickly backing up and turning around like she was about to leave.
Whiskey just looked at her, “N-no I get it..” he said giving a small nod, “Wait…don’t leave just yet.” he said hoping she would stay at least for a small amount of time, “I’m trying to find my herd….I was captured, but with the snow I’m having a hard time figuring out where I am. I don’t know if they moved due to the snow either.” he said hoping the mare knew the area at least a little better then he did.
The mare hesitantly stopped a little unsure about it. She recognized the stallion the moment she laid eyes on him. She was slightly surprised he didn’t seem to recognize her, at least not yet. Though she just looked at him, “Well I hope you find them.” she said still seeming a bit uncomfortable.
He just looked at her for a moment before he spoke once again, “Have we met before…?” he asked a little unsure. By now there was only slither of light. Maybe if it was daylight he would have recognized her immediately. Though the mare just seemed a little more uneasy before she looked down and took a breath. Better to just let it out then in.
The mare soon looked up at him, “Well if it tells you anything…..I’m carrying your foal..” she said before she went to turn around again, “I best go…” she muttered before she started to quickly walk away.
Whiskey didn’t know what to think when he heard what she had said, but once he noticed she started to leave, he quickly got in front of her. “J-just wait…” he said as he looked at her, “Y-you can come with me..if you want of course. You can join my herd if you’d like, or at least join me until I find them. It doesn’t seem like you have anyone to go to, and it’s not safe for a mare like you to be alone out here especially at this hour. Please…”
She was silent as she looked at him before she looked down. She wasn’t so sure about it, but what choice she did have? He was right. She had no one. She didn’t want to raise this foal on her own. Though she wasn’t sure about joining the herd. After a few long moments, she spoke, “I guess I could join you…a-at least until you find your herd…for now.” she said still a bit unsure, “Let’s find a place to uh spend the night…we’ll go in the morning.” she said before slowly walking towards the trees.
