Description
A Plush-crested Jay calling another in its own enclosure at the Rio Zoo, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
They are very fast moving and jump and fly around in their enclosures far more than any of the other birds on show, and are therefore very hard to shoot reasonably well. I use manual focus for my zoo photographs, so that makes it even harder. This was my best shot, I think.
These birds are found all the way from southern Brazil to northern Bolivia and the Amazon. They are of least concerned as a species and found mainly in woodland habitats. Interestingly, it is the only bird of its genus (New World jays) where its upper parts are not primarily blue or purplish, but black.
