Description I spent a whole morning at the Botanical Garden hoping to see toucans, and by the end of it started walking to the car park, full of disappointment that I hadn't come across them that day. Then, suddenly, there's chirping and a group of five individuals is screaming from a tree above me. I quickly change lenses from macro and get ready to shoot, and they fly to the nearest tree. Trying not to miss the shot another time, I switch my mode from manual to shutter priority and get shooting. I realize a bit too late that my shutter priority is at a low ISO and that all the shots are underexposed. I change back to manual as I desperately run after the group of toucans as they fly from tree to tree. Finally they stop again, and I manage to take one decent photograph before they're off again and I decide to go home. I hope it was worth the effort!
The toucan above is a channel-billed toucan (Ramphastos vitellinus ariel). To be completely honest, no it isn't. The individual shown above consists of the population on the southeast coast of Brazil, which is almost identical to that in south-east Amazon (the real Ramphastos vitellinus ariel), but hasn't been named differently yet. Maybe one day it will be Ramphastos vitellinus amalius, who knows. I have yet to decide whether I want to be an ornithologist or study canines, or both.

Gorgeous! Totally worth it! I so wish we could see them in the wild here in Australia, alas, they are always obscured by cage wires in zoos.

Thank you!
Australia has so many pretty free birds too, though! Cockatiels, king parrots, lorikeets...

Wow, great story! Are the toucans at the garden captive, or do they just fly in there to take advantage of the plant life?

It would be so cool if a species of toucan was named after you

Haha, thank you!
These toucans are free to come and go as they like, but they're always just there and in the park beside, since that's where the fruits and trees are. This is all in the middle of a big city, so you can imagine they don't really want to get out!
Haha, I wish!

Hehe I didn't realize Hong Kong's parks were so famous. Where I really wanna go in Asia is Jurong Bird Park in Singapore!

And wow, I'm just going through his gallery and he's got some amazing photos!
