Description Media: Acrylics and Watercolors. Background and character painted separately and added together in Photoshop.

Background only: [link]
Character only: [link]

I have always wanted to paint a surreal dream-like view. Yesterday I had suddenly a huge inspiration to paint clouds. I had an idea to paint of a lonely little moon-creature floating on a magical stone and watching his home rising behind the clouds.

I have never before actually painted clouds, so today I started to practice them. One of the practice pictures was so good, that I ended up liking it more then the finished picture (which I totally ruined). The problem was that the picture was missing the little moon man.

The character was impossible to add traditionally to the picture because the practice picture was really small and the gemstones needed transparent painting.
I decided to paint the character separately and add it to the picture in Photoshop. Not my first choice, because I’m a traditional artist so adding or changing things on computer feels a little bit like cheating.
I tried to use the same colors that I had used in the background, so the character would not stand out too much.

I really really like how this picture turned out!
Hope you like it too.

OOoohhhh myyy goooodnness this is sooo beeauuuttiifffullll you dooonn't belliieevveee.
That little drop thingy is so cute but also so fitting and well-coloured! Like, the reflections and shading and eeeehhh. Even though you had to photoshop it in it really fits very well and actually having it sharper gives it more focal point. I really like the abstractness of the clouds (abtract + clouds = very happy Valkreen. XD), and even though they're not quite 100% right, they still look gorgeous. :3

Oh look I'm actually commenting on your non-AATR stuff now haha! XD About time!

Thaaank youuu soo muuuuch!
I still like this image a lot (from 2009… Time runs fast. o.o’).

Love the watercolors as a media. Sometimes the end results turn out much better than you expected them to be beforehand. The glows and blending of colors are also much easier to do with it. I would love to do comic traditionally, buuuut I do mistakes when doing characters way too often. XD

YAY!

There's a short story behind this image. It's a sad one though. ;-;

There was once a little moon creature who wanted to see what it was like to live on the earth. One day he took his floating gemstone and traveled to the earth. He had a great time but when it was time to go back home he could not leave. His floating gemstone was not strong enough to enter the space again. So every night he would float up to the sky as high as he could to see and to be close the place he came from.

Welccooommme! :3

I get the opposite. I'm so worried with watercolour that I mess up most of the time. The only exception is if it's abstract or supposed to look messy, so then I have nothing to mess up haha. XD

Awwwwww. D: That's so cute and sad.

(and oops I used my Bionicle OC name 'Valkreen' hahaha. I'm getting too used to it. XD)

Haha. XD I usually mess up my watercolor works too. There’s a certain charm working on traditional compared to digital though. XD

Yep. :’(

(Haha! That happens sometimes. Usually an alarm that the OC may be evolving dangerous path of becoming an avatar instead of a character. :’D)

Yes that's very true. Happy accidents do occur more often and add a little something to the piece. :3

(Oh dear. I must stop her from defeating my dragon avatar. Things could get messy. XD)

Kiitos.

Together, the two pieces are amazing. I love how the jewel-like character stands out even though the colours are similar to those around it, it's amazing what those reflective parts can do! Beautiful piece~

Thank you so much!

The computer is an useful tool when adding together separate elements - one can adjust the chraracter size, place and the colors and contrast of the picture as much as one likes.

Ahh, yes, it is awesome. Except I'm not sure how to do things like that very well ><

I had a bad scanner for many years that always messed up the colors. I usually had to edit things on computer to make the picture mach the original...

Thank you so much.
I tried to edit it as little as possible to maintain the traditional art feeling in the picture.

It reminds me a story I read long time ago,
called 'Drippy,' the very 1st story I read in English.
It's a story about the adventure of a 'raindrop.'
The atmospher and the touch of your painting somehow look like the book.

Anyway, it's a nice work.
I like the purple color of the clouds and the dark sky.

I haven't read the book, but it is always nice to hear that the picture envokes memories. "Drippy" sounds like a really lovable story.

Thank you.

They are hard for me too.
As I said the background was originally a cloud practise picture - that helped me to try out techniques that I normally wouldn’t dare to use. (I'm sometimes too scared that I ruin the picture)
