Description This one's pretty old, but still one of my favourites.

Oh, I'd kill for a good scanner! Rawr.

Original is approximately 5x10", done with Derwent pencils (4H-6B) on Strathmore 100lb Bristol.

EDIT 09 January: Rephotographed and resized image.

Wow, OK first of all lets get to the problems that I see. The foot: tough one to do, but I think a bit darker shading to the rear and it would have brought out the front a bit more. The armor and cloak: not enough depth to them. The knife and bands going across his chest seem flat, again perhaps a bit darker shading and you would be good to go. Now with that said, you do mention having a bad scanner so that may be part of the issue in the way it translated the contrast.
Now for the good stuff. That little bit of chain mail is perfect. That shading that you have there is just enough to give it the 3D effect you were going for. That is what I mean above.
The facial expression is great, and captures a real look.
Overall a very well done picture and other than my minor nitpicky things, is perfect.

Hi'a there,

This piece is really lovely . The expression on his face is great, it really shows the forlorn feeling he must have. The armor, shield, and sword are brilliant the detail on them is really eye catching and I've noticed something new each time I've looked at it. It's also really nice to see a warrior with a shield, I really like shields and this warrior's shield is great.

Just all over lovely piece, so detailed and expressive!

OMG O.o ... you gotta tell me you secret, how do you get your work so detailed?

For the fine lines, I take my sharpened pencil and then on a scrap paper I rub the point while rotating it in my fingers until it's needle sharp -- I also do this with my mechanical pencils, even the 0.3 mm one that is my standard working tool (0.5 mm mechanical pencil feels clunky and huge to me).

Also, I work with my face very close to the paper...

Is this an original? I love his expression!

Like everyone else here, I admire the detail. If you wish for advanced critique, I've only this to offer: the eye on the [viewer's] right seems slightly larger; that area of his face seems slightly off level to the opposite side of his face, regardless his expression. Such a minute point, really. Also, the hand on that same side seems slightly less developed than the one beautifully excecuted to grasp the sword.

Thanks! Yep, original.

Thanks for taking the time to look closely, too. Pulling out the original, I see that you're right -- the structure is off. In particular it's actually the hair and the brow creases. That error combined with the drawn-back mouth and raised eyebrow (viewer's right) makes the skew.

That hand's gloved, btw -- drawing gloves still gives me fits. Such a pain! They always fold so awkwardly unless they're the extremely close-fitting type, which his is not. (Don't ask me why he's only wearing one glove -- if I every knew to begin with, I've long since forgotten )

Hands tend to be the hardest things to do, it's true. Look how many books (or chapters in art anatomy books) are out on the market devoted to this. I guess it's because they're as expressive as facial poses, and obviously far more complicated with all those joints...not to mention the difference between feminine and masculine paws *chuckles*.

One glove? That's artistic license, no? *smiles* The design's the thing, you know.
