Description A work in progress. Please critique for ideas about where to go from here.

The greatest tragedy in this world is that everything changes.

Sometimes it is also the greatest hope.

Right now, it haunts me that "Nothing gold can stay." The small remaining part of me that believes some things are eternal wants to believe, too, that we can choose to remember those who have changed, grown distant from us, hurt us, or left us in death, in a way that highlights what about them we cherished and adored.

This is very vivid, I love your color work, with green shadows on the female figure's skin and warmer looking colors on the man-arm (it looks like a man-hand and arm to me... but that may just be me) and child's skin except for the blue shadow directed towards her.
The yellow around the child's head looks like a halo almost sort of, but I'm not so sure about the yellow-ish towards the bottom of the picture. I'm not sure what to see in the yellow-brown at the bottom, but the shadow under her knee looks sort of like an evil-grinning-coyote that's pointing at how her head is bowed.
I like the reddish outlines for the figures, it keeps them in the painting much more than black outlines would I think...

that may just be me...

It IS a man-arm X3

I will admit to you that I had not put as much thought as usual into color symbolism, and was trying more for a frantic, sort of abjectly nostalgic psychological impact overall. The input you've given me has actually enriched the work's meaning! I did try to make warmer hues for the father's arm and the child, who could be the woman but is more likely a child of the present not realizing the shelter he receives while she is grieving what she has lost. The halo was not even intentional but works very well toward the overall meaning. Thank you so much!!!

^____^ I like your description!
It looked halo-y to me... but I guess yellow around a head just automatically conjures some images?

I like it even if I didn't consciously intend it

This is already beautiful... I don't really know what to add to this, as I'm not exactly an artist...

I love the message you are conveying into this. The array of warm colors and the portrayal of the figures, bring this subject to show as you said, the tragedy and hope with the coming of change. The subject also touches me due to events in my life. I feel the same as you have portayed in this painting. Change can bring pain, but also can bring out opportunities and something possibly better than what was once previous.
