A quick sketch project: the Slayers main cast in a non-anime rendition. Not an original idea, but a fun one!

Here is Gourry Gabriev, unparalleled swordsman of an illustrious line of swordsmen to possess the Gorun Nova (a sword which is itself a demon from another universe), and former mercenery, Lina Inverse's self-appointed "guardian," and he does an admirable job of it. Whenever Lina's negative traits--materialism, hair-trigger temper, brashness--come out, it is Gourry's easy-going and chivalrous personality that grounds her. Gourry has often been pegged as an idiot--in fact Lina's favorite nickname for him, half-derisive and half-affectionate, is "Jellyfish brains"--but I believe this is a misjudgment of the character. He is simply incredibly vague-headed, with the attention span of a child. When Gourry can actually be persuaded to focus, he is among the most insightful characters in the cast, for instance having been the only human capable of recognizing that Xelloss is a high-level demon. He does not have the mental tenacity of a scholar, that is true, but he is loyal and brave and casually lives by an honor code that would make most women swoon. Basically, Gourry is a human golden retriever.
