Wonderful drawing, what do you use for the black background, I have a 9B but cannot get it that black

I usually redraw the background trying to fill clearer lines with graphite pencil 8B or similar value. Maybe you can try using cotton pads too in order to blend. Then, normally adding fixative will smooth and blend making the graphite less shiny and more solid.
I recommend testing those options in order to find the one that suits you the best before going for real. Hope it helps!

Thankyou for all that information.Β I am using Bristol paper. Most of pencils are Faber Castell except for the 9B.Β I have only used pencils to sketch with but your has inspired me to try realism.Β I downloaded your Rhino tutorial which is very helpful, I kept pausing it to see what pencils you were using.Β I did a miniature and I realise it quite time consuming. Doing cat's whiskers is quite a challengeΒ ...thanks again

I saw that you drew this amazing owl, as I am doing a project in school on birds. I'm in college, so it was important that I go out and find an artist that inspired me, but your artwork will be featured as a sort of preview in my sketchbook.
