Description Drawing a Hoopoe, coloring with Pastel sticks and pencils on paper.

Colourful bird found across Afro-Eurasia, notable for its distinctive "crown" of feathers. It is the only extant species in the family Upupidae. One insular species, the Saint Helena hoopoe, is extinct, and the Madagascar subspecies of the hoopoe is sometimes elevated to a full species.

Sure! It is Clairefontaine Pastelmat. Works very nice, hope it helps!

Ambro, thanks for your response.  I will say you are one of the artists that inspired me early on.  I started doing charcoal work about 5 years ago and then wanted to do some color work as well and tried pastel pencils.  I have really only done one piece with pastels and I basically did it on the smoothest material I could find  (purple iris picture I posted recently).  I did that on smooth Bristol paper.  Even though I was far happier working on a smooth surface rather than a very rough surface, it obviously had its issues as you cant really apply too much pastel on it  (only a limited amount can be applied).  I just wonder if this paper you are using, how rough is it?  Given the extreme precise detail you have achieved with it, I assume it cant be that rough?  The reviews don't seem to go into great detail.  I am currently working on a very large charcoal picture so I wont get around to doing pastels again for many months.  Thanks for your help.

Thank you! That's nice I like those Irises
Although it might seem weird, ironically I use very rough paper for pastel so it can grab the pigment easily and then blend it with the fingers so it gives you a very good effect and soft gradient. The paper I like the most ONLY for pastel I found is the Clairefontaine Pastelmat.
I use Bristol for graphite realism and for charcoal I usually pick more rough papers but not Pastelmat. It always depends on the feeling you want to achieve. Hope it helps! Have fun and keep drawing!
