Story:
"Enough," Atsuko says, barely raining in her frustration. Yesterday, Cookie had been a perfect princess. Today, however, she is a brat. Atsuko pulls the mare to a stop, giving the steward an apologetic smile. He hoists the rail back into the cups. To his credit, he doesn't too annoyed. "Please," Atsuko says to the mare, praying the mare will listen, "just jump normally."
She nudges Cookie forward, leading her around the practice arena again, waiting for her turn to jump. As they approach though, Cookie speeds up. But as with the last dozen tries she barely tries to jump. The rail tumbles to the ground with an audible thump. Today is not the day apparently. As others send her sideways looks, she pulls the mare to the side, allowing others to pass. She grips the reins tighter, letting out a breath to distress.
'I should just pull out,' Austuko thinks, fixing her too-tight bra strap. 'But Cookie needs to experience shows...but maybe a good show is better than a bad one?' Leaning forwards, Atsuko rests on the mare's neck, torn. Atsuko, after all, was only here to get this mare in show form. This was how she made money. Training horses and selling them. The mare, however, while pretty might not be show material. And that was fine, except it did mean selling her wasn't going to get her the same price as a horse who was show material.
It's that moment the second steward, the one at the practice arena gate, calls out to Atsuko. "You're up, number 20!"
Atsuko almost calls that she's gonna withdraw but when she gets to the gate, the only word that comes out is "Thanks." Welp. Seems they'll give it a try.
