Description I'm on a roll today!
I doodled a random lion cub in my sketchbook on tuesday during a lecture. I decided to color him as Simba because, yes, I did get to go see The Lion King in 3-D, and I LOVED IT!
Took some liberties with his markings to give him a more "realistic" flavor - I'm sure you can pick out some of the changes.
Haven't done any TLK-fan-art in way too long...

Liked this too much to put it in scraps.

About 45 minutes, colored in CS5.

This is adorable! I really like the change from the pure Disney style. This is just so freeflowing that Simba seems more furry than he would if he were done in the regular Disney style. I appreciate these sorts of quick doodles as it's more about the gesture or pose than the character. I do think you succeeded in making him more realistic in style and markings than the "normal" Simba. It really makes me smile just looking at him. It's just that innocent looking face! Nice job! Thanks for sharing your art!

Awww, this is darling! And I love the liberties you took with his design - it definitely adds to the style you drew this sketch in.

Thank you! I really appreciate hearing that. There's a part of me that always wants to stick true to a character's design - my own or otherwise... and then there's the side (which I don't always follow) that loves to "play" around with the designs and re-interpret them. I'm surprised I do it so rarely considering how much I love it. I kinda wished I had played with his colors a little more too, but then I still want to maintain his... Simba-ness. And because his physical design was so different, I figured his colors should stay close.

But man, is he ever so orange!

You're welcome~! I'm like that way too - I try hard to stick to the base characters but some (especially those based off real animal coat colors or breeds) makes me want to bring back the liveliness of the realistic patterns. X3 Sometimes a true classic tabby pattern is just more entertaining to do than basic stripes. D:

Simba is very, very orange. X3 They went to the extremes to make sure the viewer got the point he was the main character. X3

I'll try! I really like how this turned out so I'd like to see what happens if I do some more. Maybe it can become another stylistic option for sketch commissions if I like the outcome. I need to do sketched that are a less "cutesy" style at some point too.

That might be a good idea. More...realistically-realized Disney characters are getting somewhat popular. And your previous sketch style was just Disney so it might work.

Those rough lines seem to indicate either a fatter subject or an entirely different pose.
