She searched Station Square for that ebony hedgehog. She couldn’t find him.

She took a deep sigh. “Where could he be? By the time I find him, the egg will have already hatched. “Where is a hedgehog when you need one? I swear, if I didn’t know any better, I’d say Shadow was Sonic. He’s always gone when I need him…” Her eyes lit up. “Maybe he’s out the Mystic Ruins!”

She ran to the entrance of the train station and climbed the white steps as fast as she could. “He better be there or I’m going to be pissed!” She stomped over to a bench and sat down as she waited for the train. She took a big huff and crossed her arms.

“Hi, Amy.” A familiar voice called.

She looked over to the direction the voice came from. She saw a black and red hedgehog leaning against a wall nonchalantly. He raised a hand to wave to her.

“Oh hey Shadow…” She sighed in a daze. It took here about five seconds to realize who she was talking to. “Shadow! I was looking all over for you! What the hell are you doing here?”

“I was bored.”

“So you went to the train station?”

“I was really bored.”

“Well, whatever. Anyways, you’ve got to go with me to the hotel. I’ve got a little surprise for you.”

“I’m not sure I like surprises…”

“Well, I think you’ll like this one!”

“I don’t know-“

“LOOK…” Amy said angrily. “I spent almost ALL of my rings on that thing so you better like it! Are we clear?”

“We’re clear…” Shadow sighed.

“Good…” She said. “Now come with me…”

She turned around to the hotel and began to walk towards it. Shadow followed her. She hummed joyfully as she began to skip. “Trust me, you’re going to love it.”

“So why are we heading towards the hotel? Did you rent me a room?” Shadow asked trying to spoil the surprise.

“Nope. But maybe I should, you know you shouldn’t sleep outside every night it’s not good for a person…”

“I’m not just any person, I’m the Ultimate Life Form… And anyways, how do you know where I go at night?”

“Oh, I just thought it was cliché.” She smiled. “Sound familiar?”

“Very funny. But seriously.”

“I figured it out. I mean it’s not like you stay at Rouge’s house and you definitely don’t hang out at Tails’s Workshop…”

“So you’re going to rent me a room now, too?”

“What? You want to stay with me?”

Shadow blushed. “Don’t be ridiculous.” He angrily mumbled

“Guess I’m going to get more rings…” Amy sighed. “And I was saving up for a present for Sonic too…”

“You know, you don’t need to rent me a room…”

“Don’t be stupid! Of course I need to. I’m not going to watch you get sick!”

“But-”

“I don’t care if I have to start all over again in my savings, I won’t have you sleeping outside!” She huffed. “Forget it. Let’s go inside.” She pointed at the hotel.

The two hedgehogs walked inside as the doors slid open. Amy pressed the button for the elevator. Shadow stared at Amy with a confused look on his face.

“Amy? You didn’t get me chao fruit, did you? I hate that crap.”

“Chao fruit? Of course not. Besides, how could I spend almost my whole savings on chao fruit?”

“Good point… So then what the hell did you get me?”

“You know for the Ultimate Life Form you sure take a long time to figure things out… I thought it would be obvious by now.”
“If it’s so obvious, then why won’t you tell me?”

“If you can’t figure it out on your own, then you’ll just have to wait until we get there.”

The elevator beeped and open it’s doors. They stepped onto the elevator and rode it to the Chao Garden. When it opened, it revealed a bunch of chao playing together happily.

Amy smiled when she spotted a black egg in the room that hadn’t hatched. “Okay, right over there.” She pointed. She walked over to the black egg and picked it up. She handed it to Shadow. “Here you go.”

He took it from Amy’s hand. “You got me an egg?” He asked, completely clueless.

“It’s not just an egg.” Amy stated. “It’s a chao egg. I want you to open it.”

“So how do you open this thing?”

“I can’t tell. It’s a secret. Do it the way you think you should.”

“Okay…” He stared at the egg for a few moments and planned how he would open it. He shook up the egg fiercely and set it down.

There was a silence for a few seconds. Then the egg hopped up and down and made strange noises. The top of the shell cracked open and out popped a black chao. His eyes were normal like every other chao and he had a tiny smile across his face.

“Chao!” The chao said happily as it ran over to Shadow.

“Aw,” Amy squealed. “Isn’t he cute… He looks just like you!”

“I’m not sure about that…” Shadow stated as he watched his chao roll around on the floor. “I’m not that… Weird.”

“Oh come on. You got to admit, he is loveable.” She laughed. “So, what are you going to name him?”

He stared at his chao for a moment. “I guess… Shade.”

“Shade?” Amy asked.

“Well I’m Shadow… and he’s Shade. He’ll be almost like a Mini-me. Or a chao version of me. I guess I’m also going to have to make him fast. After all, Faker has a chao in here doesn’t he?”

“Well yeah… But-”

“I’ve got to make sure Shade is faster than Faker’s chao.”

“I’m glad you like your present…” Amy said with a little bit of a sarcastic tone.

All of a sudden, they both heard a loud growl of the stomach.

Shadow laughed. “I guess I’m a little hungry…”

“A little?” Amy shouted. “If I didn’t know any better, I’d say a bear was about to attack!” She sighed. “Come on. I’ll buy lunch.”

Shadow looked at her. “Wait, what?”

“Yeah I guess I could eat something too… The manager of the diner is friends with me so we can get lunch there for a discount.”

“Are you sure?” Shadow asked. “I thought you said you were low on money.”

“Don’t worry about it. They won’t charge much.” She happily said.

“Well, thanks.”

Shadow waved goodbye to his newborn chao and got on the elevator with Amy. They left the hotel and walked to the corner of the street. They located the diner and walked inside and sat at a booth across from each other.

Amy greeted the waitress and ordered hamburgers for the both of them.

Amy laughed. “I remember… This was the place I hid from Zero. I can’t believe he didn’t find us in here!”

“Who was Zero?” Shadow asked curiously.

“Oh, he was a dumb Eggman robot who tried to capture this poor defenseless bird. Of course I came to the rescue! He was actually the only strong robot I ever defeated on my own.” Amy sighed. “Excluding the fact that I got captured by him… And Sonic had to rescue me…” Amy perked up. “But then I destroyed him!”

“So you went through all that trouble- For a bird?” Shadow asked

“Well I had to save him… I couldn’t let Eggman harm that little guy.”

“I guess I could understand that.”

“Hey Shadow?”

“Yeah?”

“If you don’t mind me asking, what was Maria like?”

Shadow sighed. “I can’t really remember too much. But I remember that she was kind and gentle. She was selfless, after all she sent me to earth at the cost of her own life…”

“Sorry. I didn’t mean-”

“No, it’s fine.”

The waitress brought over two hamburgers. They ate their hamburgers quickly and as soon as Amy paid, the two left.

“So what do you want to do now, Shadow?” She asked.

“Amy… I want to thank you.”

“Oh don’t mention it! I can buy lunch for you anytime!”

“No, that’s not what I’m talking about. I want to thank you… For everything. You are truly kind. You remind me so much of Maria…”

Amy blushed. “Thank you. But you’re the real hero here. You were there for me when I needed someone the must. Not to mention you rescued from that robot…”

They leaned closer together, gazing into each other’s eyes. But just as their lips were about to touch, Amy turned away.

“I’m sorry, Shadow…” She said nervously. “But I’ve- I’ve got to go!” She ran off in a hurry too afraid to look behind her and see Shadow’s reaction.

Shadow stood there silent. Could I be- No it’s not possible. I couldn’t…
