“Ugh…” Amy moaned. She slowly opened her eyes to see Sonic smiling. Her head was pounding like a drum.

She was in her apartment on her couch.

“I’m glad you’re awake.” Sonic smiled. “I managed to get the blood of your clothes…”

Amy’s eyes suddenly widened. “Sonic, how long have I been out?”

“About an hour.”

“Where’s Shadow?” She cried out.

“Don’t know. I left that backstabber on the ground. He won’t bother you anymore.”

“I’ve got to find him.” Amy stated.

“What?” Sonic was stunned. “After that guy tried to kill you?”

“What the hell are you talking about?”

“I saw him carrying you. You were soaked in blood!”

“THAT WAS HIS BLOOD!” She screamed angrily. “Believe it or not, Shadow risked his life for me back there. If he hadn’t been there…” Her eyes started to water. “I might not be here.”

“I can’t believe that. He might try to hurt you.”

Amy ignored him and ran to the door.

“Where are you going?”

“To find Shadow.”

“But-”

Amy turned around and glared at him fiercely. “Now you listen to me! Shadow tried to save me and now he needs help. Whether you believe me or not, that’s up to you. But if you try to stop me…” She became angrier. “I’LL NEVER FORGIVE YOU!”

She ran out the door into the rain leaving Sonic speechless. He looked down at the floor in shame.

The rain was pouring down on her, drenching her in water, but she ignored it.

“SHADOW!” She cried. “WHERE ARE YOU?”

There was silence.

“Shadow. Don’t die on me!” She began running ahead.

PLOP!

She looked down and realized she was standing in blood.

“Shadow…”

She saw a trail of blood leading to where their battle had began. She followed it hastily.

There was Shadow.

Amy ran over to Shadow’s body and nudged him. He wasn’t moving.

“Please Shadow. Don’t die on me. Don’t die on me. DON’T DIE ON ME!” She cried.

She nudged him more and more but he still wasn’t moving. She realized that he was unconscious… For now.

She tried to pick him up to get him some help. Unfortunately, Shadow weighed more than her. She pulled with all her might but she couldn’t lift Shadow.

“I… have… to… help… him…” She strained. Tears started swell. “Great. He saves my life, and now I can’t save his. I really am useless.”

She heard a rush of wind.

Right in front of her stood Sonic with an easy look on his face.

“Sonic? I told you-”

“I know.” Sonic looked over at Shadow lying on the ground. “That’s why I’m here to help.”

Amy smiled as she tried to wipe the tears from her eyes. “I think we should take him to the hospital.”

“Okay.” Sonic picked up Shadow and began to walk towards the hospital as Amy followed.

“I just hope it’s not… Too late.” Amy whispered.

“Amy…”

Amy looked at Sonic with sad eyes.

“It’ll be okay.”

Amy smiled. “Thanks Sonic.”

They finally arrived at the hospital. Amy rushed through the door.

“Help! My friend needs help!”

Later that day…

“It’s been an hour. I hope he’s okay.” Amy sighed. She sat in the chair next to Shadow’s bed.

“Still not up yet?” Sonic walked into the room with a cup of hot chocolate.

“No…”

“He sure is taking his sweet time to wake up…” Sonic laughed.

Amy looked at him in silence.

Sonic coughed a couple of times. “Uh, sorry.” He looked at Shadow once again. “So how’d it happen?”

“We were attacked. Someone tried to fire on me and I didn’t see it. Shadow managed to protect me but… he couldn’t protect himself.”

“Why are you guys talking about me?”

There was an awkward silence.

“Shadow?” Amy asked in excitement.

“What am I doing here?” He asked. “And why does my chest hurt?”

Sonic smiled. “For a second there, we thought you weren’t going to make it.” He teased.

“You kidding? It would take more than a bullet and a couple cuts to take down the Ultimate Lifeform!” Shadow laughed.

“YOU’RE SUCH AN IDIOT!” Amy screamed.

Sonic was a little frightened.

Shadow was expecting to be pounded by a hammer, but instead he felt cold drops on his fur. He realized that Amy was crying.

“I was so worried…” She began. “That you were going to die… all because of me. I don’t know how I could have lived with myself with that on my conscious… I WAS SO SCARED!” She began to sob hysterically.

Shadow took his nonchalant look and patted her back.

She gasped for a second, and put her head down in Shadow’s chest and began to cry again. Shadow left his hand on her back, trying to calm her down.

“Promise me you won’t die… Promise me!” She sobbed as she tugged on his white chest fur.

“I promise.” He smiled.

She began to stop crying.

In less than an hour, Amy had fallen asleep, still on Shadow’s chest.

Sonic laughed. “Well I guess I better take her home.”

“Must’ve tired herself out crying…” Shadow stated.

“That’s not all she was doing. She was out there searching for you in the rain. She felt really bad about all this… Um, Shadow… I wanted to say… That I’m sorry about before. I should have trusted you more. It’s just, Amy…”

Shadow stopped him. “It’s okay. I understand.” He looked at Amy. “Just make sure she gets home safe.”

“Sure.”

He carefully picked up Amy and walked towards the door.

“So, you think you’ll be out of here soon?” Sonic asked.

“Yeah. I’ll be up by tomorrow.” Shadow laughed.

“See you later, man.”

“Later.”

After Sonic left, Shadow let out a sigh. “Amy, I’m sorry I put you through that…”
