Description This is a replica of an original 15th century War of the Roses harness. The armor style is German Gothic. This armor is made from wax castings off of original pieces, utilizing original armor smithing techniques. The only differences are that the steel in this armor is stainless as oppose to mild and it is custom fit to the owner.

From top to bottom we have the Sallet (top of head), Bevor (chin), Spalders (shoulders), Besigeus (flower shaped armpit protection), and the Cuirrass (breasplate and backplate).

This is free to use stock photography. I ask only that you link back to this deviation and leave me a comment with the art you've created

Model: Thane Arnold

Photography is taken by me, armor and weapons showcased courtesy of the A Knight To Remember program. Check out the website here for more photos:

I'm curious do you or someone you know have videos from this event posted? It might be nice for gestures when this type of armor is in motion. Either way I plan to use this to understand metal reflection and armor construction

And you seem to have lots of knowledge about armor, do you have any books you'd recommend?

Sorry for getting to you late!

I do not have any videos posted of this event, sorry. However, if you'd like, on the next event in June I can take some video of the two knights in this event walking around, doing the show, riding the horse, etcetera. I've been meaning to get some footage myself anyway. It won't be until several months from now, but it's something.

As for books I could recommend, I plan on seeing my boss soon and I'll ask him to give me a list. He is a historian, the one who wears the tapulbrust armor. I will get back to you!

That's perfectly fine, don't worry about the lateness.

Ah that would be wonderful, and that's perfectly fine for me at least. I won't have as much time till the summer hits for free time projects such as studying in depth armor/knights. I'll definitely watch you and check back for updates.

Thanks, that would be great.

Here are books on Knights and armor I would recommend to you after finally getting to talk to my boss!

Knight: Noble Warrior of England 1200-1600, Christopher Gravett, Osprey Publishing [link]

Brassey's Book of Body Armor, Robert Woosnam-Savage and Anthony Hall, Brassey's Inc. [link]

Lots of books from Osprey Publishing: Military are really great. They have a lot of information, photos, and dynamic paintings of many warriors throughout history. Just check out the books from their Men-At-Arms Series: [link]

I hope that this is helpful! If you're interested in horse armor (a topic rarely covered very well,) I'd also recommend The Armored Horse in Europe: 1480-1620, The Metropolitan Museum of Art/Yale University Press [link]

I shall get more dynamic photos and possibly videos when I get the chance.

sweet thanks these will probably be very useful. Next time I get a little spending money for art books, I'll be sure to pick up one or more of these.

And thanks I've started to notice a lot of my rough sketches involve characters in armor. So, I'm starting to take up a real interest in learning about it... seeing as I've never really studied..... ANY >__<

How heavy is it?

The entire harness weighs 70 pounds. Typically, armor for war could weigh anywhere from 60 to 80 pounds. That's no more than modern combat soldiers can be expected to carry on their back alone, but evenly distributed over the entire body.

I'm not wearing the armor, my associate Thane is. I'm the Squire at these events, the one who helps them in and out of the armor, cleans it and the weapons, takes care of the horse, etc.

One of the biggest myth we prove false in the show is the knight being a turtle on his back if he falls down. Carlo, who is in my other pictures, will completely don his armor and then fall down in front of an audience. Then he leaps right back onto his feet and runs around without any trouble at all

Your bevor is not attached to your breastplate. If it gets hit, you might feel it on your teeth

It was not made to be attached to the cuirrass or the spaldiers. It's more likely that the hit would glance off and knock the side of the face than be pushed back so far that it hits the face, as you can see here: [link] You'd have to dent it pretty hard to reach the mouth.
