Description A conceptual take on the "Wounded Knee Massacre" which happened on December 29th, 1890. It was a terrible and tragic event, in which hundreds of American Indians were slaughtered for no reason at all. you can read more about it [link] there if you wish!

This was done for the upcoming department show my college has, and as a senior i am required to participate The buffalo represent the U.S. army, taken from the nickname some soldiers received, aptly named "buffalo soldiers". The wolves/coyotes/foxes/canines of course, represent the American Indians.

enjoy!

Very well-made image! As far as the symbolism goes, I guess I'm one of those ppl for who it doesn't work out here.
- The 7th Cav. /10th Cav. thing has already been mentioned before (Buffalo Soldiers were from the 10th, they were involved in the wider context but didn't perpetrate Wounded Knee).
- I wouldn't associate buffaloes with white soldiers either when an Indian-white conflict is depicted. The Indians were the buffalo-people.
- What's more, I'm no fan of associating Indians with wolves. I know, it's happening all the time. There are countless pictures, getting more every day, which have an "Indian Princess" snuggling with a wolf or a "proud warrior" side by side with a wolf. Whites back then often associated Indians with wolves - pointing out the non-human predator character they ascribed to both and calling for the merciless extermination of both as an act of self-defense. This association has -oddly- survived until the present day. It was just turned into a tacky kitsch trope. I just can't stand indians = wolves for that reason.
- Finally, buffaloes stampeding over wolves looks like a collective act of self-defense. The mighty, yet all too peaceful giants finally have enough and crush the bloodthirstly predators and clean them out once and for all. That's how many whites back then might have viewed it. But I have quite some issues with such associations.

Yeah... sorry... a piece of art elicits lots of various responses in different viewers. This was mine. Very well done though, so take it easy!

This piece is incredible. It's hard to see bison depicted as the villains (since they were as much a victim as the American Indians were, although they are now finally starting to be returned to their habitat). However, it's hard for some to see American soldiers as villains too. Sometimes that's the reality of the situation. Your line work is so good.

What a great concept. So many people just pass off such history as old news, hardly worth a second glance. Or still revere as heroes those generals who led battalions against what I think were perfectly justified actions of the American Indians. But it really is terrible. For all that America has stood for freedom and equality from the beginning, there are a great many stains on her history.

I also like what you said somewhere about the Americans acting like stampeding buffalo at one harmless gunfire. The fact that several of the buffalo in your painting seemed pained, feeling a wrongness at what they're doing, which keeps in mind that not all the soldiers there were ruthless killers fighting for the glory of their country. They were all just people, with morals and opinions like all of us, and their job that day was to slaughter a whole bunch of people, regardless of what they thought on the matter.

On a less sober note, I absolutely love what you've done here. Those brighter sort of shadow-outlines of the wolves/canines give their expressions that much more impact. The textures and dusty feel of it give it a great atmosphere as well. Marvelous work!

Excellent art, so viceral with the dark of the buffalo and the red of the wolves and foxes. Like a dark cloud of soot snuffing out the embers of a people.

As another commenter pointed out, it's to your credit as an artist that a typically nonthreatening animal looks so violent and malicious, and the animal that usually gets painted as the villain looks frightened and vulnerable. Really well done. I love the composition.

Haha, I actually grew up less than a mile from a buffalo farm, so I know that those things can be TOUGH when they want to be! There's a reason nobody goes "buffalo tipping"

Your painting represents SO much. The detailing and colors you chose definitely go with it. Whenever I see works depicting the torture and inhumane treatment of American Indians, I feel like crying (which, I usually do). I just want to thank you for putting this up.

Very vicious piece, and somehow the colors--kind of muted, but still with that grim bloody red in there--really support the action as a whole.
