Description This started as a widescreen desert landscape, then changed to a post-nuclear war wasteland, then after some more re-starting from scratch it finally turned to be a toxic mecha/creature emerging from an hole in the ground and attacking a lonely outpost -- basically a cheap Sparth rip-off -- it was an interesting exercise for getting more familiar with ArtRage nonetheless

You are one of my favorite digital artists on here. Abstract digital artists i mean. I love all your concepts.

Sweet! I can see the similarity to Sparth, without it looking like a copy.

Thanks! It's not actually a copy, but I feel like the whole concept (big alien like starship with curved surfaces floating in a square picture) is a bit similar to a series he was painting some years ago

No, I didn't think it was a copy - I'm quite a fan of Sparth so I would have recognised a copy. I was just pointing out that I can see his influence on your work without it looking like you were just copying his style!

Thanks for your interest! Are you an ArtRage user too?

I do have ArtRage. I think it has some great tools for painting, but I don't use it as much as I should! Maybe using your tutorial, I'll get back into it a bit more!

I use it since the 1st version but I started using it daily only with the 3rd one that got released recently and that's having many features that were missing in previous releases. It becomes quite slow when you work in very high resolutions (5000+ pixels in width for instance) no matter the machine you have ahah, but it's a great software for painting

It is great for painting. I also have Corel Painter which cost a lot more money, but when I use ArtRage I feel the brushes behave just as good! I haven't tried working in high resolution in ArtRage yet - maximum of about 2000 pixels up to now.

I bought Painter 11 too (using a deviantARt discount) a while ago but I find myself using ArtRage more, basically cos Painter has many nasty bugs and some image quality problems concerning selections. I miss some of Painter's tools (liek the Glow pen, the Pattern pen, and some other stuff) and I hope sooner of later the guys at Ambient will fill those holes )

I'm sure they will! The glow pen is an awesome little tool!

il mio preferito... le textures di fondo sono difficili da realizzare in artrage, bravissimo.

Looks like something from the Matrix wandering the desert. Really cool. Nice work! I'm a Gimp guy myself but this is really good!

Gimp is my mainstay. But, I've got a pile of others. I downloaded one tonight I saw mentioned somewhere on DA called SAI. Haven't played with it yet. Mostly I use Gimp, Photoshop Elements 3, and Pixa. I have Paint.net, but, haven't used it much. I think I'm a graphics program junky!

andreabianco In reply to Wastelander7 [2010-02-04 10:17:08 +0000 UTC]

I guess I'm quite a graphics program junky too then SAI is quite good but I never got used to it, just like with OpenCanvas. Pixia was my first painting software, it is a great software -- too bad it looks like its author never really understood how great the software he was developing was. Paint.Net is a great tool but pretty useless for painting since it has no brush engine (not at the moment, let's hope for 4.0 release). It is interesting to try all diff software and to try to create with em

Agreed. I've had a chance to play with Corel x4 and was surprised to find that Gimp is MUCH more stable. I've seen Corel completely lockup computers. The memory gets maxed out and stays that way. And I got a plugin that allows me to use Photoshop filters and brushes in Gimp. I agree with you on Paint.Net. The lack of a brush engine is a pain in what would otherwise great program. Inkscape is interesting too. I tend to jump files from app to app playing with different effects filters. It seems there's always one effect that you can do in one program that you can't quite get in another.
