Hmm, well, while I don't consider myself a master -I still need a lot of improvement-, I can give you some tips (that I'm trying to apply myself): Practice, practice, practice. Draw a lot, paint a lot, and even some sculpting can't hurt (so you learn more about volumes).
Try different mediums: Buy pencils, charcoal pencils, colored pencils, pens, different types of papers, even draw digitally. When you aren't drawing/painting: Observe. Observe a lot. You can even think about what you see. Describe things in your mind. Think about the lights and shadows (and where does the light come from), the textures, the perspective, the colors, the anatomy of things. See the little things in relationship to the whole picture (because in my opinion, it's all about realtionships...contrasts). Try to memorize these things, so you can have more painting references in your mind. Then try to draw them by memory. After that, you look for photographic references (or "live" references), and correct any mistakes. Meanwhile, you can also create stuff that comes only from your imagination/emotions (it can be abstract, fantastic, whatever). In conclusion, practice a lot, and develop auto-criticism (constructive criticism). I hope these things help you! Good luck and enjoy the ride! ^^
