Description Cory: "She's the most beautiful bird in the world!"

Requested by . You do such cheerful work!

I am VERY proud of this, especially since I got this done in, like only TWO hours and got it to this caliber, whereas I spent 15 on "Sumo Chibi" and came out to be among my poorest work. Again, it all has to do with the enthusiasm and appreciation you have for the concept and character! I may put THIS in my portfolio, but then again, people may say the character isn't as direct as many of my other pieces. They COULD only see a Disneyfied version of a bluejay ( *flinch* *eye twitch*), but eh, one safety to back me up.

I think the feathers should be a bit more smooth and streamlined, and not too fluffed up like they are here. They don't emphasize her shapely fig-er, and she's known for speed and has an edgy side too. Makes me wonder what she's been up too.

I'm getting very comfortable with Corel Painter, so much that if this keeps up, I may have to get the ninth addition for my own! I should up it on my Amazon Wishlist *hint hint* *WINK WINK* *NUDGE NUDGE*!!!!!

Lark is one of the many zany character in NORM & CORY: [link] !

Fantastic colour work! I thought it was a photo of a weird looking blue-jay (since it had cartoony expressive eyes) XD

Aww, I love blue jays. There used to be one that I would feed peanuts to it. I'd throw the peanut and he or she would fly and catch it.

This is incredible. The smooth qualities of it are really amazing. I have the hardest time drawing small-beaked birds. I can handle eagles and falcons well enough for my enjoyment, but those small beaks are incredibly difficult for me. Anyone that can do this has got some skills in my book.

Keep up the good work.

Aww.. I really liked, Sumo Chibi. Well at least the funkyness of it. But yah, this one is like super special looking. Awesome job, ESPECIALLY for 2 hours! All the blending and details are masterful! The colours really pop out here. Seperately, just the appeal of the way you fleshed out, drew... whatevered the character is on the super scale of fabulous! Lets not try to guess what this means. Another piece to be added to the battle for last to favourite for the current DA rummage-through.

Oh, Andrew. She is the most beautiful thing i've seen all month.
I can't get over this. You have such an incredible style. And truth be told, I don't see Disney at all in this. There's only so much you can do to personalize a bird like this but you pulled it off beautifully. You have your own style, I can pick it out of the crowd and I could go into a list of reasons why she isn't a Disney-esque character... but I won't. Just take my word for it. Put her in your portfolio and be damn proud that you created such a wonderful piece of work.

I would so buy a print of this. I'd give her a snazzy yellow frame and hang her in my kitchen. She'd certainly cheer the place up!

Just gorgeous.

You are such a sweetie!

This has, to say the least, gained a HUGEly successful response, and is one of the few deviations I have where the favorites actually outnumbered the comments! I may submit another version of this specificly for a print, my first one! XD

And BTW, what DOES make this piece non-Disney? I would love to know, in case i try to do it later.

y2jenn In reply to andrewk [2005-04-19 04:33:10 +0000 UTC]

Oh, good! Because I promise I would buy her in a heartbeat.

Well... First off, despite the evils that Disney has done and/or is doing now, I'm still a huge fan of theirs. I know the style well... and I while I do see similarities in your style and theirs, it isn't due to you drawing the same. It's just because it's a cartoon... it's a bird. It's hard NOT to associate something we might do with something Disney has already done. It will always be that way.

Okay, to answer your question.
Your characters have a... "mature" look about them. Their eyes show their age. Your style is very different. Built on boxes and hard edges. Especially in their faces. Disney however is almost always smooth. Their lines are strong but their characters are built on circles more-so than yours are. Even the big guys with the muscles and even the old guys with no meat on them at all... they're all very rounded.

Umm, take this for example: [link] This little guy is obviously Disney's. Round and smooth... if you were to draw him, he'd be a little harder around the edges.

I don't think Disney when I see your work because it obviously isn't. The only reason why others might is because we associate an "american" animation style with them because they were the first. They're the ones that set the bar with animation and animated styles. You can't look at a Dreamworks lion and not see some Disney influence there. It's not because they're copying The Lion King, it's because we grew up knowing what a Disney-ized character looks like.

So, while there are some things that might lead someone to believe your style to be Disney-like... it's still very much yours. Did all that make any sense at all?!

andrewk In reply to y2jenn [2005-04-19 13:30:24 +0000 UTC]

Okay, thanks! You have a good point about how I draw a bit edgier and don't use circles as much. I'm not aware of that, so... I guess... THAT'S MY STYLE! And in THePortfolio class just yesterday, someone pointed out that there are a lot of angles and edginess to my NAME as well! ANDREW KAIKO See? Edges! Yeeeeeee!

Nice work! You're really getting a good grip on Painter! I love the contrast between the soft and hard edges.. It really gives it an interesting style, and the orange backlight really brings it off the canvas.. You've got your color theory down to a science!

FablePaint [2005-04-18 18:48:47 +0000 UTC]

Awesome use of backlighting, but I would've made the backlight more pale yellow, indicative of an afternoon sun rather than a sunset. However, the orange makes for an excellent contrast. I kinda agree with you about the feather-fluff, it seems a little much for her character (and yet, it is SO much fun to draw fuzzy things ). I like the subtlety of shape there, too. Her cheek pushes in slightly as she smiles.

Disneyfied? Screw Disney! Work for Pixar, they would eat this concept up!

andrewk In reply to FablePaint [2005-04-18 20:54:17 +0000 UTC]

YOu know, Pixar is working on films for other studios now, so it will be great to see how their content develops! I consider Pixar to be my most ideal goal, and you know how well ideals fit into realities but now that we are going to expect different things from them, I should have second thoughts.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FablePaint In reply to andrewk [2005-04-18 21:17:28 +0000 UTC]

Agreeing. I eventually want to get an internship there, but I'm not sure about working there. The future is uncertain, especially since they are breaking their contract with Disney, but that may be fortunate for Pixar. Disney places limits on the kinda work their studios (or whatever) do, it is very kid-focused and kid-friendly (and sometimes takes this as an excuse to go for an immature quality most un-becoming of the company that presented the public past highly-polished films). Without these limits, Pixar can expand into more adult, mature themes with edgier jokes and darker, more twisted plot-lines. They touched on it in "The Incredibles" (to quote a line that shocked and amused me..."And got bus-AY!?") and did a fine job, so I don't expect they'll hit quality rock-bottom anytime soon (unless something dreadful happens...but let's pray it doesn't).
Second thoughts are the safe pessimism everyone should keep in mind. But I wouldn't condemn them yet.

Well, I'm not impressed with their Cars trailer, and that was the first of their trailers that did NOT entice me to see their films. But then again, Bugs Life was their worst film to me so far, so this can't be any worse.

Their next film is said to be centered around rats living in the floors of a French restaurant. It won't be called 'Rats' but the name of the main character, and the studio they are working under is still a mystery.

I think it's called "Ratatouille" or something. There's more information about it on the movie section of Yahoo.com.
Ya, if Bug's Life is the worst they can do, then we shouldn't worry too much. I've heard similiar reactions from friends and on the Net regarding the "Cars" trailer. I don't think it looks so bad (then again, I like shiny things). Yet (once again, on the Net) I've also heard that trailer's quality compared with the skepticism of one critic towards the "Monster's Inc." trailer, and that turned out awesome!
You must be excited by the prospect of a rodent centered movie (points to Cory).
