Description (I'm listening to the radio, and 'The Age of Aquarius' happens to be playing as I write this! )

Here is the cast of the story Scorpio, as it stands now. This will be part of my Independent Study in the Spring, but I am already thinking about it now because i anticipate it will be a lot of work, and I have nothing else to do today either. It will be looked over by my teacher, so these are very likely going to change. I am still working on the story, which my teachers says should come first, but I find I work better when I create the characters first, and develop a story around them. Many of these guys are unnamed.

Adrian- the fearless hero. The main storyline I have for him now is a rookie knight trying to earn his respect from his planet. He falls in love with a girl from Sagittarius, who you will see in another piece.

Adrian again, with his helmet on and his sheild

the ruler of the planet Scorpio- a giant of a man, a mix of Robbie Coltrane and Sean Connery. Represents the planet's inner, chaotic temper that is trapped within the cooled lava on the surface. Acts like a father to his most trusted soldiers. Yes, he IS wearing spats.

a female detective, who throughout the story, is on a case involving the king and his rival, the ruler of Taurus

3 of his administrators-
-a tall, elegant, but light-headed Secretary of State, has an infinite knowledge of the planets' history and literature
-a stout, introverted Secretary of Statistics (think Stephen Root from 'Office Space', who has an obsessive habit of calculating the statistics of everything at a calculator's pace
-a female Secretary of the Treasury. Has a secret crush on Adrian.

the Scorpio counsel's resident priest of no particular religion, the ultimate Mr. Cool, rumored to be high on a drug of indeterminate origin, smokes it through a stick, owns a moped

Scorpio's international scientist/fortune teller, predicts the future and advice to all of Scorpio by studying the stars and other planets with the use of his underground lab/observatory. Completely insane, but is the best guy for the job . Helps Adrian in the most unexpected moments.

Cool, love their designs. Style reminds me of Samurai Jack (in that there are no outlines but the colors and shapes themselves define the character), I love it.

Ya, when i was making stories i did find making the characters first was easyer and way more fun to do. But I found the stories sometimes never really got to some guys, or I had to throw them in somewhere, just so they can be in the story. It's REALLY REALLY REALLY hard, but you should try and listen to your teacher, your story will come together alot better.....not thats any of the stuff you've done sucks (Norm and cory is like on my top 3 favor comics). It's just things come together easyer.
As for you characters: Your hero looks awsome, your vile looks prefect in every way an evil ruler should look, i really like that tall administrators design. and the crazy guy has the best design of all, I love that eye thingy, what ever it is. I hope you put a good spin on his character, it would be a ture shame to make him 'gernel~crazy~guy#46'

dude... totally awsome design work. you've got variety in the shapes while maintaining a sort of unity between all the characters... like they're part of the same world.
rock on.

Personally I think they look very cool that way. You convey the essence of the character with such simple forms. The hero looks very appealing to me, as if he were pared down to his basic nature. I like the armour, too.

Looks like there's quite a lot to this story - I'm really looking forward to seeing it all in action.

I've submitted many Scorpio pieces where the characters are hand-drawn for a while, so that's another reason why I'm surprised people act as if they've never seen these characters before. I guess no matter how you get around it, drawing stuff with the Lasso Tool always makes it look like Samurai Jack.

Do you recognize the mad scientist from another deviation?

Rayfan In reply to andrewk [2005-01-25 14:14:12 +0000 UTC]

I went and looked at some pictures of Samurai Jack on the internet. I don't see much resemblance myself.

Yes, the guy with the lens on his eye? I was going to mention him but my brain shorted out or something, I do remember him.

Since I have no idea what Samarai Jack looks like, it doesn't look like that to me. Just looks cool.

I think this a great style man. I'm really digging how many of the overlapping shapes are still able to convey the appropriate shapes without resorting to an outline. I really think that these character designs would look brilliant animated. Wow... this just rocks.

i cant really say if i like the style or not. it is rather new and different in comparison to what you usually put out and in what i usually see....though i think i like the art style that was used in your Hand drawn comics for Scorpio better though

Okay...

I will say this once more....

If you haven't read my last journal entry....

It says that because of this STUPID snowstorm, I am without a scanner, because I do not OWN a scanner, and the scanners in the computer labs are not usable because the academic buildings are all closed. This is my only resort today!

Maybe I should've made it clearer in the description.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

zhavas In reply to andrewk [2005-01-25 20:55:52 +0000 UTC]

now we have to READ your journal to understand what you draw? and why you draw it?

please explain, I can hear a head inflating

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

andrewk In reply to zhavas [2005-01-25 22:15:52 +0000 UTC]

I know, I know it's not a requirement to go to another page in order to understand a piece. Not everyone takes the time to read journal entries. I just hate reiterating myself on an artist description AFTER I talk about it in a journal entry. Most of the work I do these days are for people who have known me and my work long enough to understand background information, which is sort of a bad habit to get into if you are showing your work in a situation where complete strangers can just walk in and won't have a clue what they're about.

In this case, I happened to submit the piece first- this latest journal entry came after that. Even though I did not expect everyone to understand the exposition of this Scorpio piece, I had NO idea people wouldn't know that this new "style" WASN'T a choice for me. I thought I had written enough about the snow storm and the emergancy shutdown in my region that everyone would know my situation. I was wrong. But then, how else can you make a public message on this site besides telling about it in an artist description?

I think, to repay my actions, I should resubmit this piece with handdrawn characters, because now, the scanners are accessible. It would only be fair, and present the characters in the way I originally wanted to portray them.

So, the school is back open now, and my head is not going to inflate. I went with my best assumptions all the time, but they aren't always right. But, who has the time to figure out every fact in the world?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

zhavas In reply to andrewk [2005-01-26 18:48:53 +0000 UTC]

this is true. but I still shouldn;t have to read a blog to understand.
hand drawing is so much easier anyways, I can;t figure out how to use my school's pallette tool, too complex and frustrating, so I decided not to buy one for exactly that reason...although, for animation it must be pretty awesome.

AnimeFreak40K In reply to andrewk [2005-01-25 15:18:26 +0000 UTC]

ahhh......i think i missed that in the description. im sorry, please forgive me. and no, i didnt read your journal. again, i apologize and i understand completly
on a side note, despite my issues with this style that youve been forced to resort to, it could be something worth persuing for future referance

using that technique for when they speak, I hope the short-stout advisor only speaks when his mustache moves. I think that would be funniest.

I like the simple style a lot! I really dont have any reserves about their faces except for the main character. I find that his body design is well thought out, but his face seems to be too generic and suffers from "main character blah-ness" he just doesn't have the same appeal that the other characters have. And dont get me wrong, the other character are amazing, I was blown away! So, keep up the good work!

Eh. I like this style alright and I particularly like how all the characters are different shapes and sized from one another, but the faces are really weak. The stylization process has really bled the expression from them. You oughtta maybe study some more Samurai Jack and then come back to this.

The mad doctor at the end is my favorite, by far!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

andrewk In reply to TVsKyle [2005-01-24 19:46:29 +0000 UTC]

I agree, the mad scientist is my favorite too!

Scorpios are characterized by their faces being divided at the mouth, so the top part of their face separates completely as they open it. The Lasso-Tool technique I used does not illustrate their expressions as clear as when I draw them by hand.

What makes you think I was thinking of Samurai Jack?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TVsKyle In reply to andrewk [2005-01-24 19:52:55 +0000 UTC]

Are you bound by the lasso tool techinque? If not, I think you should consider hand-drawing the eyes so you can get at least part of that expression back.

There are a lot of design similarities to Samurai Jack, so I assumed it was an influence.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

andrewk In reply to TVsKyle [2005-01-24 20:03:52 +0000 UTC]

Um.. yes I am bound. I have no access to a scanner, because I do not own one, and the computer labs that I usually use are closed, due to the storm. I may redraw these later though.
