I feel I should defend Nintendo (though I hate Mario with passion) a little. While they have a tendency to keep bringing out new versions of the same games they also spend a great deal of time and effort making up new franchises such as Pikmin or Animal (neither of which I like but their both fairly original) and, to their credit, unlike so many games companies they actually try and improve or add something new to their sequels.
Incidently, have you seen the new Nintendo controller for their next console, the Revolution. It really is quite unique.
Great picture, Link as a smurf. Bizarre but strangely fitting....

Cheers buddy.
Honestly, I could argue about Nintendo all day. Revolution? Little more than an eyetoy gimic which am sure could be replicated. Basing a console on this is pathetic, and not very revolutionary. Of course, I'll have to see how it plays first, but I cant imagine being comfortable playing a footie game of First person shooter with that thing without looking like an idiot.
Sure, they have a few original ideas now and then, only 2 stick to mind. Japan is full of these type of games on all consoles, just not many make it over here. Whats up with Mario party 27, Mario football, Mario basketball, Mario Golf, Mario hockey, Mario Tennis...they put his name to a load of crap, and bring him out on a proper platformer once evry 4 years or something.
If Nintendo didnt have the likes of Metroid Prime, Mario, Zelda, Pokemon then they would sink very fast. Thats the reason why Gamecube sales sucked, and apart from Japan who love quirky stuff, I dont think the Revolution will last. I expect it to do a Dreamcast on us (which boosted better graphics, 4 joypad ports, a playable attachment to the controller and online play...all 'revolutionary' at the time.)
No attack on you mate. I just gotta my Nintendo hate out of my system.

Hatred of Nintendo is perfectly reasonable, even though I'm happy to defend them I'm not their biggest fan. The Revolution controller is kinda interesting in that it works like a 3D mouse apparently and should work well for FPS's. Admittedly more traditionally controlled games would have trouble with this but it has been adressed with clip on controller shells (I'm still not convinced this is so great though).
As far as original ideas go Nintendo and Sega have a long history of interesting ideas (analogue sticks and rumble packs first featured on the N64 and were assimilated into the Psone pad)- though more than a few have failed horribly (virtua boy?). Cashing in on mario's name means more money for more original games and it keeps the franchise alive (though mario could happily die as far as I'm concerned), it's at least better than yearly updates.
Alas, it's not they're franchises that keep them afloat it's the fact that unlike every other console manufacturer they actually make a profit on their hardware- they don't need to sell as many games. The phenomenal success of their handhelds also helps.
I'm not saying Nintendo are great, but it's hard to deny the games industry is better for their continuing existence.
